I bought this 89 5.0 Mustang engine and I found that it has stock GT 40 P heads on it with stock springs. I removed the heads today and found the stamping YYY In the lifter valley with a steel lifter hold down plate, not plastic. I know that this stamping is a generic code for a Ford 302 but it has this style timing cover on the front of the engine. Can anyone help me identify this timing cover?in the lifter valley with a steel lifter hold down plate, not plastic. Looks like your standard roller 302 that someone added GT40 heads to later on.

What do you think is different with the timing cover from all the others?

Because the timing cover has a sensor on it unlike the fox body years. the gt40p heads had stock springs which makes me think it’s a later model explorer motor

Not an explorer timing set or accessory drive.

Looks like F150 timing cover and sensor for the 4-post trigger wheel.

On the block head the header, there is a part number cast into the block, as well as a date code as to when the block was case. Also, the rear china wall where the blue gasket in the pic may contain a partial VIN stamp if you clear it up well enough to see.

If you can get those numbers, you can make a good guess as to what this block is out of.

Also, on the cylinder heads, there will be a date code cast in the rocker valley somewhere as well. Ford date codes are 4-digit, with a letter in the 2nd spot. Something like 2A13. Jan 13, 1992 (or 1982, or 2002)

36 E7TE CA S 302 block

is under the starter once I took it off. The numbers on the china rail started with LF 22***

The heads were GT40P with stock springs inside. Based on that, I would guess this came out of a truck from 90's? The firing order is HO
