What is the best way to clean a shortblock? Right now the block is sitting on my engine stand. I want to clean it up before I install the new cam and heads. I already scraped off all the old gasket material. Any suggestions on removing the old oil and debris.

I want to make sure I won't damage the pistons and other internals.

Thanks.

I'd start with dish soap and water, then take oven cleaner to it and a pressure washer....that should get it clean enuff to paint

someone told me if you dip stuff in gasoline and then take a toothbrush to it that works great, sounds like that does carbon build up to me, dunno about engine grease..
