Help me diagonse my noise

When my car is cold I get a whiny metallic squeeling noise that sounds like its coming from under the car. I listened with the hood up but cant pinpoint it. It will go up and down with the RPMs and get lower when I put my foot on the clutch. If I rev the engine with the clutch in it will still affect the sound.

After the car warms up it will go away. It started when I moved to Washington and was in much colder weather than Southern CA. My car is in the garage but its pretty cold in there too.

Is there something in the transmission that could make such a noise? Maybe a throwout bearing? But wouldnt the noise stop when the clutch was pressed? The fact that it goes away once the car is warm is throwing me off.

If it were the TOB, the noise would subside with the clutch depressed.

You sure it's not the serpentine squeaking as a result of increased climactic humidity?

remove the serp belt next time you start her up, takes all of 2 minutes and it'll help narrow it down

mine does the same thing. sounds like the starter motor.

I was thinking it could be the belt since I changed it before moving but it doesnt sound like a belt squeak and like I said sounds like its coming from under the car. Ill give it another listen today.

hey man my car is doing the exact same thing and I was told that it was my TOB.. a friend told me that depending on I drive it could go out in a few weeks to a couple of months-he said you'll hear it get louder and louder as it gets worst... even though the sound gets quieter when the car warms up I can still hear it at drive-thrus, etc cause the sound echoes off the wall... so it might still be there, you just don't notice it...

I have 125k miles and never replaced it yet so I wouldn't be surprised... one way I know it's not my belt is because I had it replaced along with a big maint done at 100k...

tell me if you find out it is something else...

I had the same problem on my car and it turned out to be the ac compressor clutch.

Wouldn't the AC clutch only do it when the AC was on?

Is there any other way to test to see if its the TOB?

Someone suggested maybe an exhaust leak. I suppose its possible since it scraped pretty good underneath when loading it on the trailer. I always remember exhaust leaks as a ticking sound. Could it also sound like what I described?

It's not the TOB - as stated, the noise would go away as you pushed the clutch pedal in.
It could be the AC clutch - I dunno, but understand that the AC is always driven whether the AC is on or not. The clutch is not engaged, but it is spinning. As I said, I dunno, but it could be...
You need to run the car with your head under the hood (or underneath the car) to try to better pinpoint the noise. Keep us posted.

Hey 2003 Geee T did you find out what was causing your noise??

I just had my clutch and TOB replaced this past weekend... the clutch had about 5k miles left and the TOB was on it's last leg... I ended up getting a RAM powergrip and a friend helped put it in... no chatter and it is soft but i was told it is probably that way because I have the 4:10's and a clutch cable quad (resuing old cable)...

get it checked out soon-the 01-04 tremec stock clutch kit was out of stock at most places I checked and some kits said for you to have the clutch cable quad installed.... the shops around here wanted $450+ for labor-that's not including the price of the clutch
