Help me find quieter exhaust

I'm still supporting the aftermarket exhaust industry - after installing muffler/resonator number 7, I'm still not happy with the sound. Too much resonance, too much volume.

Need your help guys - anybody out there running systems that are MUCH quieter than our typical FlowMaster fare? Remember, I'm running a single system, so set ups you've seen on (gasp) F-bodies might be more appropriate. I've run FlowMaster (too loud), Bassani (too loud and too much resonance), SpinTech resonators/SpinTech muffler (too loud), and now a MagnaFlow muffler (in front of rear axle) feeding into a SpinTech muffler (behind the rear axle) -- still too loud. Thought about trying a stock Z28/Firebird LS1 muffler, but it's a bit too big to fit on mine. What am I missing guys? I'm old -- what's a much quieter aftermarket set up out there?

Mike surprised running the two mufflers was still too loud but I'll offer you my experiences. Having been down the same road as you (except running dual setup) I got tired of a loud sounding car and spending $$ every two years to replace them so I bought two summit turbo mufflers (@$15 each) and found them to have a good sound and are much quieter. Of all the mufflers I've owned and heard turbo style seem to be the quietest. I did, however, notice that they do not flow as much as I had to retune the car.

Also, another way to lower the sound is add more bends to system..not sure if this is an option but will help.

Jerry Beach & I have had this conversation, and we concluded that both mufflers being the same distance from the exhaust port was the likely cause of the resonance or "Drone". If the mufflers were offset by 3 ½”, most of the drone would be eliminated, since the pipes would resonate at different frequencies.

Here’s what Jerry found out & relayed to me: “finally got a look at that 85 stang again. The offset is 3 1/2". I measured it carefully with a straight edge and a helper. It has stock headers, a Y pipe going into 3" single exhaust, a small cat, then it branches out again. It has some cheap looking turbo mufflers and stock tails. Maybe its a combination of things that make this one so quiet, or maybe its the offset.”

It’s on my list of things to try, but with the size of the flowmasters in the fox chassis, the 3 ½” may be hard to do without bumping into something.

what kind of car r we working with. i have a 88 gt mustang, b4 i put my off road h-pipe on, when my cats were still on, i put mufflers off a 95 cobra and my car was much quieter then a h-pipe with 2 chamber flow masters and 4in tips. though i was pulled over once for it being to loud, but the cop let me go. but ya try the cobra muffler, it kept my 5.0 pretty silent.

Hooker MaxFlows are quiet during regular driving. I like them, but under WOT they are very loud. I'd say, if you could put one of these on, and another small muffler, before or after it, you would have a nice quiet ride. They are not too expensive from Summit.
Just an idea.

I'm with him MAXFlow's are the best quiet muffler i've found.
Another option is the DynoMax Super Turbo mufflers, on my
friends car even with a O/R H-pipe they were whisper quiet.

Thanks for all the tips guys - Jrichker/Jerry Beach - mine's a single system so the offset muffler theory is not applicable on mine. Think I'm gonna try a Dynomax Super Turbo -- seems to be everyone's consensus that they are far and away the quietest.

my borlas are pretty quiet. no drone and a nice WOT tone. I don't run tails on mine and its still very quiet..if the super turbo doesn't work out might wanna give Borla a try...oh yeah they're the Pro Turbo XS series. Very nice and make more power than my old 3 chamber flows (and quieter too)
