Ok, so my motor is starting to make some sounds. My best friend who works at a honda dealer, GM guy at heart, but like anythink on wheels, says he thinks its the bearings. Its kind of like a tapping, only under load, and in the upper rpms from ~4000 to redline it happens. if it happens, it usually gets worse with rpm. so, im preparing myself for a motor rebuild within a year or so, who knows...

So, here are some ideas im throwing around

A. Rebuild my 4.6 with forged internals to prepare for the KB I hope to put on there eventually

B. Bore/Stroke it out to about 5.0L with of course forged internals

C. Drop in a 5.4 from an F150 that i might be able to get my hands on, after it has been built with a forged bottom end

D. Take that same 5.4 and bore/stroke it with forged internals

or

my wild card crazy idea i had

E. shoehorn in a V10, and possibly build with forged internals

no matter what i want to prepare for a possible KB, maybe a 2.2 since ill be runnin the forged goodies

thoughts?

Thanks guys!

F-uck all that other stuff, just keep the 4.6 with forged internals. Stroker is ok, but once you start swapping in other engines you open up a hole new set of problems. And, in my opinion, it's not even that impressive. For a street car, how much power do you need to get your kicks off. The only reason to swap in a V10 would be to create a monster drag car or just to boost your ego when you tell your friends. It wouldn't even handle that well with that big of an engine.

forge the bottom end then run a TT, kb 2.2L, or novi 2k setup.

save the extra money on the shortblock and put it towards the boost IMO.

staying with a normal setup will make the work go nice and fast and save you $$$ for adding insane power in the future.

from starting to read up on the V10 idea, its not that much heavier than the 4.6, ford R&D tried it a few years ago, and a few others as well, its just never gotten off the ground

thanks though, ill keep your thoughts in mind, i can understand what you're sayin about making other problems, and ill especially keep that in mind

v10 is a waste of time. have you driven a v10 truck? they are a POS!! just forge the 4.6 not stroker unless you are staying N/A. then get a blower, novi 2k, KB2.4, or TT. i think that swapping in a different engine will get you a LOT of headaches. and not to mention you prob wont be able to pass emmissions. you can hit 1000 HP with a 4.6 so why would you need anything else? the ONLY thing i would even consider changing is maybe a 2v to 4v swap. that would be as far as i would take it.

i voted for the built 4.6 but i just remember that mustang they put a v10 in on rides the show in tlc or discovery it was bad a** but they only made one or two of the engines, the mustang was used as a test mule for the engine and they went thru like 6 transmissions,2 rearends in one day along with no telling how many clutches. it would push the front tires at like 30 mph locked up,

The V-10 swaps are gaining popularity with the Crown Vic crowd. Never seen it with a Mustang though, itd be badass.

I think they are a sick engine though. My buddies Excursion had one at it would move that big thing like nothing. They rev just as high as our 4.6's do, we ran it to 6k plenty of times...

just build a 2v or 4v. like everyone else said those other things will be a major project.

btw, your making 243rwhp and 286rwtq with a catback, or have you not updated your sig in a while? that seems strange!

i read another thread that said our 4.6 does better bored than stroked. i suppose both is good too but the dimentions are already set up for torque with more stroke than bore. Thats why i went X-pipe cause im good on torque.

It'd be interesting to see a bored/ de-stroked turbo stang. little stroke+big bore=quick high rev engine. the shorter the stroke the less inertia going away from the crank, therefore RPMs like a son of a son.

Tech polls are extremely rare, did you ever notice that?

IMO, your most cost effective approach (if the KB is definitely in your future) is going to be rebuilding your current 4.6L the better bottom end components.

Either way, plan to put down 10-12k to get it done.

I would get a 2nd opinion. If it's tapping and it's under load it is probably the top, not the bottom of the motor. When my 305 motor blew the rod bearings it knocked, not tapped. My chevy pickup started tapping and I checked the oil. It was low. I put 2 qts. in and it went away. It made a nasty tapping sound though and you could hear it under the valve covers.

Maybe explain the sound a little bit better before asking how/what you should do yet. It could be something as simple as a head job (no pun intended -- could be my next CT...) Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Adrenln, you read it right, i havent done anything since the dyno, Except the K&N Drop in listed in my sig, but that im sure didnt do much, i just took out the stock air box. though the numbers are 1 1/2 years old. so maybe it has gone down a few from wear and tear of about 20k miles? i dunno

everyone at the dyno day was suprised... i mean there was an 01 Bullitt there that day with a magnaflow cat back, a predator, and i think an intake and he only ran about 10-12 hp more than me... i think he had around 257 or so cant remember

i thought about going back and doin another dyno to see if it has changed at all

EDIT: just remembered, my numbers are probably high because it was run on A. a dynojet(but im sure most people's are), and B. they are STD numbers, not SAE corrected....
