i bought the car and it was already wired up with a stereo system. i never had a clue how it worked and honestly didn't really care. that is until i wanted to take the darn thing OUT.

the harness that goes into the back of the deck has a few RCA cables and a harness. i cut the tape off the harness that ran into what looks like the stock wiring harness to find that only 4 out of like 20 wires were actually used. the wires were yellow, black, red, and blue. i would think i'd leave these alone? what is each color for? it's an eclipse head unit if that helps.

next is the speaker wiring...oh this is the best part.

the front drivers side dash speaker go down into a crossover and then into an amp. the passenger side dash speaker also goes down into a cross over and into an amp. basically the same deal with the back.

now the RCA cables from the back of the deck go into each of the 3 amps. 3 amps are a little cluttered, not really needed and need to come out.

it looks like he left all of the stock wiring in place, but just cut the connectors off and taped it up. does it sound like he ran all new wiring all the way around the car?

if i were to just connect the stock speaker wires, would i get sound based off the wires from the harness in the back of the deck?

im so confused, but i want this thing the heck of out my car. if anyone needs pictures to confirm assumptions on what things are, please, LET ME KNOW!

IIRC the stock headunit uses 2 different plugs. one plug is power and grounds the other plug is speakers. what model eclipse do you have? get me some pics of what you have and i can prob tell you wwhats going on.

just so you know im an old school eclipse geek!

i wanna say the 5543 was a powered unit. it should be the normal 3 volt (+/-) powered unit. the only non powered units from that series was the 5504,5506, and 5509.

5543 = first year
55430= second year of that series.

pull the headunit and take a pick of the harness and the back of the deck. i may even have an extra harness laying around that would work for you. i have 5 units in my attic right now not counting the 2 installed in cars haha.

yep it has a built in amp. thats what the white, green, grey, and purple wires are for. the big thick grey cable with all the pins in the end... thats for a cd changer or a DSP unit. either you have one of those or the car did have it. the 2 way switch that refers you to the owners manual is like an on/off switch for if you have a changer hooked up IIRC if there is no changer in the car dont bother hooking the cable back up.

the easiest and cheapest way to get set up the way you want is to go to a stereo shop and buy another install harness. use the oe for the block stock plug and match up the colors.

me personally i would leave a small amp in the car just for the front speakers and call it a day. what kind of amps are in the car? you never mentioned that.

ya the car has a cd changer, i just unplugged everything to pull the deck out some more.

the car has 3 clarion amps.

there's a smaller one that's probably a foot long that i think the front speakers run to (2 channel?). and then there's 2 bigger ones that are probably a little more then a foot that are 4 channels, i think. the big ones you can hook 4 sets of +/- speaker wires to and on the side they have 4 female RCA inputs; 2 red on the top and 2 white on the bottom. the small one has 2 sets of +/- for speaker wires and 2 female RCA inputs; 1 red on the top and 1 white on the bottom.

i left one small amp for the dash/door speakers. should i get rid of the cross overs? all i get is highs from the dash/door.

where can i get the harness that connects to the stock harness?

i also have more pictures i will upload tonight

no, leave the x-overs in. thats what keeps the bass out of the tweeters. if the amp has a built in x-over you can prob adjust it down a bit to get a little more bass from the doors.

as for the harness, any best buy, circuit city, or local stereo shop should have it. hell wal-mart or autozone might even have it.
