help me!!!!!

I have a '76 cobra II. I got it from a friend about a year ago. He told me the only thing it needed was a rearend. He was mistaken. I am still paying him on this car, however, I have only paid him $150 of the 1100 I owe him. Now we are going rounds about the price because the car is not what I expected. He tells me the car is worth $2800 I don't believe it is even worth the 1100 I agreed to. Here is a run down of it...it needs a motor rebuild if I can save the block, I have rebuild the carb twice now, it needs paint and body work, the air conditioning is gone, it needs an oil pan, and the interior is shot. The wiring is also a mess and it doesn't even have a kickdown for the tranny. I need some opinions on how much this may be worth. HELP!!! I want to keep this car and fix it, I really wanted a project and this is definately one. So please help me if you can. Just from what I have told ya'll how much would you pay. Oh and it needs wheels and tires too. It is also missing the spoiler in the front and one of the spoiler corners in the rear. please help.

My advice is give the car back to him with, tell him to keep the $150 for his troubles, and go find a better car. There are plenty out there, you just have to look. Sounds like the car you have is not worth the trouble.

1st mistake you made was already commiting to the deal. You sould have gone over all that stuff before commiting. Because now, you're more or less obligated to follow through since you tossed $$ down on the table. If it's really that much of a turd, dump it. Thake the $150 loss as a learning experience and leave it go at that. However, if the agreed price IS $1100 and the body is straight and rust free and most all the V8 stuff is there, that doesn't sound so bad. I know where there are 4 Mustang IIs (Portland Auto Wrecking on Columbia Blvd.) that would have rear axle assemblies and pretty much anything else with the exception of Cobra specific stuff (at least at this time). If it's a 3rd member that you need I have a few of them and I could set you up with one.

You live here in Vancouver? Is this Cobra II the turd that sits on Brandt Rd just north of Fourth Plain? Or actually last time I saw it, it was in the apartment complex's parking lot off Brandt. Or the one that's off 29th street and about 'L' street? (in that area) I live out in Orchards.

Not to be rude or anything, but if I was that guy I think I'd be a little PO'd myself

I don't know if you are talking american or canadian money, but you don't get much to start with for that kind of money (american) anymore.

My opinion, offer the car back to him for $150 so he can sell it to someone for the $2,800 he says it's worth.

It is the one on brandt rd. I offered him to take the 150 plus another 400 this tuesday. Does that sound good to you? It runs, kind of, the whole motor is there with the exception of the kick-down and the AC. The 400 is cash for the title. Should I push it?

The car isn't worth 2800....... I got mine for 1500 with a shot motor and transmission.... and a slew of other developing problems and trashed interior. I probably over paid. I did buy the car "running, and driving" and it had a nice coat of paint. I think 1500 was over paying though.... at the time I didn't realize that though.

1100 isnt too bad if the motor is salvagable. It is a Cobra, I would look at the body if it's rusted through the floor and what not its either major resto or junk. Everything else can be fixed up. The body well that's different.

like the others have said, the condition of the II isn't the issue here. It was what it was when you said you wanted it. You should have looked into it's condition and value when you bought it.
After a year, either pay him off now or give him the car and title back. Both ways, he's waited long enough.

Honestly the car is a littke rough, BUT is a good starting point for a Cobra Project as it looked fairly complete. I never looked it over with a fine tooth comb so I'm not sure what cond. the body really is in. As far as i could tell it "looked" ok. Fortunately up here rust isn't really ever a factor unless broken glass or a window left down or leaky seals causes floor rot. In my opinion $1100 is a bit much but this is commong from a guy that has yet to pay more than $500 for any II he's owned, including my Cobras. If it's what you want and are looking to keep it for a while the higher price will more than likely balance out. Being patient and thrifty on replacement parts will also offset the higher initial purchase price too.
I guess what I'm saying is, if the car is what you want and he still agrees with the $1100 price tag (and you're content with that) then go ahead with it. If he is now wanting $2800 tell him he's smoking crack (probably is) and let him keep the $150 for his next fix. We'll find you something MORE reasonable in that case.
If you are going to follow through with the car, those repairs aren't even a problem. A 3rd member from the wrecking yard can't be more than $50-60. And the rest of the repairs are pretty straight forward too. Wiring probably isn't as bad as it appears because 90% of the time the tards just 'add in' more wire to make stuff work or add devices.
