It is a 351 with a two piece rear main seal. My mech. installed a new one last thurs. He let it idle for 20 min. Did not leak. By the time i got home it was leaking again. The leak is pretty bad. He is going to do it again Mon. He did not drop the tranny the first time. He dropped the k member and lowered the engine and the oil pan. I was told it could not be done correctly without dropping the tranny but there is a tool you can use to reach up there and put it in but was told this only works half the time. Was told to make sure you install it right you must drop tranny, which he will be doing mon. He thinks maybe the galley lugs or cam plug is leaking. My money is on the rear main again. But atleast he is dropping the tranny to check the other things. The engine has very little miles on it. It is a 11:1 compression and he put a pcv valve on it. Is there anyone with any experience with the 351 two piece rear main seals that can give me any advice. My mech. is going to eat the labor this time. But i want to make sure it is installed right this time. He also says there is already a repair sleeve on crank so a groove in crank should not be a problem. I need to know the right way to do it with no shortcuts.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have only done it with my engine on a stand. I would think that getting the tranny off is a must to make sure it is in correctly.

make sure the edgs of the 2 seal pieces do NOT line up with the line where the main cap and block meet..offset them about 1/4 turn with a glob of good RTV where the ends meet..dropping the tranny is a must IMO..but to each his own

Maybe its just me, but I would just pull the motor. Seems easier than dropping the K member and pulling the tranny, Plus he could go through other things with the engine out.
