Hi all,

I'm wiring up a manual switch for my main fan and tranny fan. I originally ran it all through the switches only, but they would overheat way too fast. So now I"m going to wire in relays for each switch.

I'm having trouble getting it right though.... here is a diagram to help visualize.

Now, this diagram is for my tranny fan - I'm not sure how to get my switch working to run the relay. I have my switch grounded, and then what do I do from the switch to the relay???

I've tried running a wire from the source power on the switch to the #86 on the relay with no luck... then I though maybe the switch would need it's own power source - so I gave the switch 12v too. IT works like that, but it heats really fast again, and I guess it's bypassing the relay.

Any help on this mess?

This is the way a typical 5 wire relay is wired.

Although I suggest if you are trying to wire relays for fans look into a dccontrol and get rid of the archaic relays and switches.

thanks for the diagram........ I guess my questions is left at.. where does the "to switched power" wire go to the actual switch? should it be on the source power wire(+) or the battery/fuse box (12v) wire..........

I'm sure the relay is connected right, it's just getting the switch to activate the relay...

It will hook up to a 12 volt powered switch.

I dont get this one bit. On the switch, one terminal should say something like "Power" and another terminal like "Accessory".

What is the nomenclature in the instructions for terminal 86?

I would surmise that The 'source power wire' is akin to 'accessory' and goes to the relay (it should be easy enough to check the switch out before hooking anything more than a power feed to the switch).

In your diagram, do you have 12 volts or ground going to terminal 86? If you actually switch ground instead and you want to keep your interior switch the way it is, you need to remove the ground wire to terminal 85 and supply 12 volts to 85 instead (so the ground from your switch energizes the relay's coil).

Good luck.

In your 'schematic' the 'source power wire' on the switch needs to run to the '86' terminal on the relay. The power wire in '85' - should be fused with a slow-burn fuse sized to handle the fan's amperage - I'd use at least 12 ga. wire on the 85 terminal and the relay ground as well as the power to the fan. The switched circuit can be smaller wire.

You'd be much better off running it with one of these -- www.dccontrol.com.

This will help you visualize what's inside the relay........
