hey guys, i dont know exactly whats wrong with this thing, but it seems that 4th wont engage on my aod. i can put on D and itll shift 1-2-3 just fine, but if it put it on OD, around the time it shifts to 4th (~2500-3000rpm from what ive been noticing while cruising, havent tried a launch) the trans just wont engage at all, the enging revs will climb but the car is basically just coasting. if it revs high enough itll catch for a split second, but only long enough to chirp the tires and get the car moving for a little bit. again, using the D gets through 3rd no problem with no slipping issues all the way up to 4 grand. is it just OD thats bad, or do i need to rebuild the whole thing, or what? please help, im completly lost on this one.

no offense, but that doent really tell me how to fix the problem. can i just get a new OD band, or should the whole tranny be rebuilt? what kind of parts/time/$$ would be needed? is it something i can do myself or should i get it to a shop?

You might be able to get it to lock with a shift kit. Your lucky its just OD so far.

if the band broke, then you can likely just change it. if it burned up and is making metal, then you should strip it completely. all depends how much metal contamination there is. if you have no experience with automatics, then i would definately suggest letting a shop handle it.

would i be able to tell this by just dropping the pan, or would i have to pull the trans?

at this point with my luck im betting the whole thing needs a rebuild or a replacement (t5 swap maybe?).

You won't be able to determine much by pulling the pan. Like I said, you can get a kit to increase pressure, or you can pull the trans. and fix it, or swap to a t-5, or drive it the way it is. I would not rip into the trans. without rebuilding it. Im rebuilding an A4LD right now, and its not rocket science but its not child's play either. Good luck.

you could drop the pan yourself, the only trouble i find is that most people don't know what to look for. i would suggest letting a good reputable shop drop the pan, with you watching (if they allow it) a good tech will be able to explain what the debris he sees is coming from.

no kidding.........

anyway, i was assuming any shavings and debris would be a bad thing and means rebuild right? how much would the average trans shop charge (ballpark) to check it, or even go as far as rebuild it with a shift kit (since its opened up)? how about any good shops in the st. louis area?

im still debating if its worth it to spend money on a 142K mile aod when it seems a stick-shift swap would cost just about as much.
