mysterious ticking noise
I realize that this is a mustang forum and this thread may be abandoned, but I was wondering if anyone has had any luck in determining the source of their noises, because my mitsubishi galant (2.4L 4 banger) exhibits the exact same symptoms described here. When the car is cold, it wont make any ticking at first until it warms up, but then it makes what appears to be valve noise especially above 2k rpm but the noise goes away when gradually accelerating or pulling a hill, and seems to be less noticeable or even nonexistent when it is in 4th gear and also when accelerating or going uphill (sadly its an automatic) but once you stop accelerating, the noise is immediately noticeable. I have to coast downhill because any amount of throttle when going downhill makes it tick the WORST. This seems to point to the engine timing, because when the engine is under load it seems to be much quieter. Has anybody had any luck diagnosing this problem? Also, when I switched from 10w-30 to 0w-30 full synthetic, it seemed to tick slightly more, but hasn't got any worse since. When it does start to tick slightly, giving it more gas actually makes it better.... up to a point. Above 3k rpms it tends to sound worse, however, there have been times where i have accidentally blipped the throttle while in neutral and sent it up all the way to 6k rpms without a single tick.... and the loudness and intensity is independent of rpms, but more dependent on how much load is on the motor. In neutral, it sounds awful as low as 1k rpms but when in gear its fine to 2k and when pulling a hill it seems happy up to 3k rpms especially in top gear, but even if its quiet, it will readily tick at any speed as soon as you let off the gas which is extremely annoying since I frequently let off the gas to try to get it to shift as early as possible. This has caused me to gap the throttle and let off of it just as quickly, since it doesnt seem to like the transition from accel to decel. I have been told it sounds like a rod bearing but it doesnt behave like one. Been driving it gingerly for 6 months now, sounds good as long as you dont cruise at one speed but instead are always speeding up and slowing down. Also passed compression check with 180 psi on every cylinder after 6 cranks, with less than 1 psi difference between them which is as good as you can expect from 165k miles. Any ideas?
