HELP!!.. unscrewed the wrong plug on my TKO 500 thinking it was the fill plug...PIC

I was under my car looking for the fluid fill plug, I saw this bolt on the driver side so I loosened it up and removed it. When it came out I soon realized it was not the fill plug and noticed the fill and drain plug on the passenger side. Can I just screw this back in with no problems, or did I really mess something up and now I have to take the tranny out to fix it???

You will need the Adobe Acrobat viewer which is also a free download – http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

According to the service manual it is the reverse balancing pivot pin. You will need the manual for more information, but judging from the drawing, you get to pull the trans and remove the top cover & shifter mechanism.

Here's a pic. I stuck my finger in the hole and that pin on the end of the bolt definitely goes through somethng. I have a feeling that there was some sort of clip on the end of the pin and that got pulled off when I took the bolt out. It's really not looking good. I'm in no mood to tear apart my brand new transmission.

Thanks for the link jrichker. According to the service manual. That bolt is the reverse balancing pivot pin. Sounds like it performs a pretty important function. I'm ****ed

Yup i agree - looks like the reverse balancing pivot pin (2604720) however it doesn't look like there is any clip on the inside that holds onto it. I am willing to bet that if you haven't touched the shifter then you can probably put it back in. Also, give Bob hanlon a call and see what to do. http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/

I wouldn't have thought that retaining clip would come off so easy since it's supposed to secure the reverse lever to the pivot pin. Unless you bent the crap out of it while removing the pin. I can't see any other way than to open the cover and replace the pin and clip. Maybe having this happen is both a blessing and a curse.

Son a of bitch. I called MMR and they told me that there is an E clip on the end of that pin and I do have to take the tranny out and put the clip back on the end of the pin. Tonight is going to be a loooong night

Well I dropped the transmission and pulled off one of the top covers and the area where the pin goes in is right there in plain sight. The guy from MMR said I'd have to take apart the whole trans to get to it, but that's not the case luckily. The problem is that I can't find the damn E clip anywhere. I'm shaking and banging the trans but it won't come out. I used compressed air too with no luck. I can't even see where it might have fell. You guys have ideas on how to get it out?

I'm gonna run to the hardware store and pick up another E clip and a long skinny magnet to hopefully find this clip. Maybe if I fill up the tranny with fluid and then drain it out the clip will find its way to the bottom of the case?

There should be a magnet at the bottom of the case. See if it's stuck to it. Haven't taken my TKO apart yet but the T5 had a magnet to catch metal particles.

OUCH! I hate when things like that happen. They are always such a waste of time and a PITA to fix. Oh well, you'll never forget which ones the actual drain/fill plugs now. Haha. Best of luck man.

The clip did wind up on the magnet at the bottom of the case. I can't reach it with anything so I'm just gonna leave it there.

When I went to put the transmission back in, I ran into another nice little road block. I had the tranny almost flush against the bellhousing and I pushed it in some more and I heard something fall to the bottom of the bellhousing. I said some curse words and threw a few tools and I pulled the trans back out once again. I reached to the bottom of the bellhousing and picked up a freaking piece of the throwout bearing!!!!

It seems that when I took the trans out I wasn't careful enough and I damaged the bearing, and when I went to put it back in it just gave out. I'm glad that piece broke when it did though. I'd hate to have it break the first time I go to drive the car. If I have another problem with this trans, I'm gonna flip out.

just remember how good it will feel when you row through the gears for the first time after you get it back in. That is what i think about when things go bad. My dad almost pulled this out of my 84 when we first got it, he thought it was a drain plug also. The rachet was too big to let him get the bolt all the way out and he screwed it back in and it didnt break anything thank god.

Race - time to take a break, step back and start again when have had a chance to calm down. I notice once a few things go wrong, everything starts going wrong. I always take a break and come back to it when I have relaxed a bit.
