Help! What does this wire do? (PIC)
Today I am trying to chase down a problem of my car not always starting. Sometimes the car will not start and the battery smokes. So today I pulled the battery to find out what is wrong. Turns out there is a wire back there that is ripped apart and brushing against the battery. Problem is, I have no idea what this wire does. I traced it back to the starter relay but it seems to into a bunch of other wires. I thought it was for an alarm, but my other car that does not have an alarm has the same wire.
Here is the wire. The picture is of the area directly behind the battery. At the top is the winshield washer fluid reservoir. The other half that is broke off goes on the negative battery terminal.
