HELP!!! what tailshaft do i have?

i have a '73 mach one and i am in the ongoing trial of switching over to a 4speed. my supplier (who shall remain nameless for now) was supposed to ship me a complete changeover setup which i paid dearly for instead of getting a part here and a part there. anyway he has ended up replacing every single part so far becasue they were wrong. now i have a different tailshaft and the hurst linkage doesn't seem to want to bolt to it. i even ordered a new installation kit from summit for the car and it doesn't want to bolt up. the part on the tail shaft is D0ZR-7A040-A. one site i found says it's out of a 65 F-100 with a 352, but it wasn't made clear if that was an original intsallation or not. does anybody know of a decoder site ( i couldn't find one for the tailshaft). the tranny is the right piece, but it still wasn't what i ordered (wide-ratio intstead of close) but it will still work. i have been doing this project for four months and still haven't put a tranny in and i need help!!!!

I don't know who you're dealing with, but if you'll go to 4speedtoploaders.com, you'll find there, a complete chart showing all the various Toploader tailshaft housings that were produced. Your tailshaft housing with a D0ZR # was originally produced for 1970 Stangs, not a 65 pickup truck. Also you need to order a shifter installation kit for the tailshaft housing you have, not for your car. But then again that may cause problems too, the shifter may not align with the hole in your floor, if the tailshaft housing is the wrong one for your car.

nobody told me it came out of an F-100, i entered the part number into google and that's what it came up with. obviously wrong.

You did better getting the wide ratio...

That mistake was in your favor.

What is the overall length of your tranny?

What is the length of the pilot portion of the nose of the tranny? (there are 2 lengths, the shorter is 7/8" and the correct one for you is over 1")
I am assuming you have an engine other than FE or Lima of course.

Someone please correct me if I am mistaken (it's been a few years since I crawled under my '69 to look at the shifter) but isn't there an adaptor plate that bolts to the tailshaft for the hurst shifters? In other words... I don't think the Hurst unit bolts directly to the tailshaft, there is a flat adapter plate that bolts to the tailshaft that the shifter then bolts to the adapter. I would assume it came with the installation kit. There is also another adapter for using the Torino 4 spds in mustangs to acomadate the different length.

Yes, you're correct. And that adapter plate is included in the installation kit, along with the shifter rods,bushings, clips, adapter plate bolts, etc. Only thing not in the kit itself is the shifter and handle.

The Torino kit includes just the parts needed to install the shifter in a Torino. You can't install a Stang shifter and it's install kit in a Torino, the rods are too long. Each kit is unique to it's intended application

DHearn : I thought that the adapter should come with the kit ( it has been 17 years since I installed a new Hurst shifter into my car) The Torino trans in a 'stang adapter plate was listed in one of the parts vendor catalogs (I believe it was Mustangs Unlimited) - It was specifically listed for adapting a Torino toploader into a Mustang.

the hurst adapter plate for a '73 mustang won't bolt up to the tailshaft. the length "looks" to be correct but i haven't measured it. i got some measurements today from someone with a toploader out of a 73 and i'm going to see how the one i have measures up. the guy that sold me the tranny is going to send me the 2nd "correct" adapter plate for this tailshaft. i am going to measure the lengths and mounting locations and if they are the same (probably not) i will keep what i have. if not i have the option of having him send me another tailshaft, buy one from david kee, or buy a complete changeover assembly from someone else i've run into and then take what i need and try to sell the rest.

If you happen to have a Torino tailshaft housing, I'll take it off your hands, it'll work perfectly on my 89 Ranger.

the tailshaft part # is D0ZR-7A040-A which according to david kee's site belongs to a big block car. i don't think the site actually references a car or not (i can't access the site at work). the tailshaft lenght is @14.25". comparing the measurements of this one to the actual tailshaft on a 71 mustang the lengths and mounting positions are the same IF i can get a proper mounting bracket for the hurst shifter. if not, i'm back to my 3 other options. i'm supposed to get the bracket by the end of the week so i will know for sure then. if this was quick and easy i guess everybody would do it, not just the crazy people like me.

The Torino tranny is C6 length... the Stang tranny is C4 length.
You can't just switch tail housings and be done with it.
There are internal differences.
The Stangs never came with a long shaft Toploader, so there would be no parts to do the swap, not to my knowledge anyway. The key to the swap would be shortening the driveshaft, just as you would when swapping from an FMX or C4 to a C6. Then you would just use a Torino install kit, shifter and plate. You would also have to relocate the crossmember to the C6 mount position.

Some of the Torino's also used the shorter ( 14") Stang tail housing.

I stand corrected.
I love Torinos, but have never really studied them hard. I have only seen a few toploaders from them and they were all long tail.

Go to www.4speedtoploader.com, this is David Kee's website, he's got a complete ID list for the tailshaft housings, along with other ID charts for the Toploaders too.
