hey guys my car was throwing the service engine light so i bought an obd2 scanner and plugged it in to read the codes. with the key on it will not do anything but give me a J1850 SAE Protocol code. Now my car will not start. any help will be appreciated im not sure what to do....

also when i turn the key on the cd player just turns like its scrolling through the cd's.
i unplugged the cd player and it still will not start.
when i try to crank the car the starter just goes click click click at a fast pace.

did you try to jump start it? is the theft light flashing? try to jump start it, then if that fails, we can go from there.

well i thought it was something to do with the obd2 scanner and the computer because the scanner kept flashing and wouldnt read the codes. but i did jump it and it fired right up.

but my next question is my scanner still wont read the codes. it freezes up when i try to link it with my car but it worked on 2 other vehicles flawlessly... any ideas on this?

Replace your battery then try to use the scanner again and see what happens.

You need to find out if the battery has discharge. Could be why the scanner isn't reading.

Scanner does not pick up DTC's

It could be that your battery is too weak, or, this may sound stupid, but did you program your scanner for your specific car? It has to be programmed for your year, model and engine type!

its not the battery because i even put a booster pack on it as i tried to scan the car and it did the same thing. also i read through the whole manual and it does not have to be programmed for any year model or engine type. this is strictly a scanner for dtc's

Try this...

You have to find out why the battery was dead. Even if you jumped it there could be a weak batt issue. Not sure if that is your scanner problem but it could solve it if the battery is weak and you have it replaced.

my battery went dead because the car had been sitting and the scanner must have drained it. i have been driving the car and it starts up fine every time...
