I own a 96 Cobra sc. My problem is the tach goes down towards idle when I let off the gas but then hangs at 1400 rpm. It's worse when the AC is on. It eventually drops back down to normal idle, but not without what seems like a huge delay. It's noticable during shifting and takes forever to unstick and wind down after the car is already stoped at a light. Can anyone please tell me what might be causing this? Thanks.

Me Too

I too have a '96 with the same annoying condition. First, it is normal and most cars have it (part of emmission control), some more pronounced than others. I have been working with Livernois from whom I purchased a SCT programer, though they have yet to disable this characteristic. I had a Bullitt before this that had the same problem (at least I felt it was) and when I had a Diablo chip installed the program eliminated the idle drop down. I wish there was a better fix and hopefully some one out there will read your question that has a solution. Hope this helps, and if you find a solution, PLEASE, let me know and I will do the same. There is a myriad of reasons why this can occur. It can be fuel or ignition related. There could be a vacuum leak somewhere, your fuel filter could be clogged, so on so forth. Best bet is to take it to a dealer and have it checked. If you have a custom tune, you're gonna have to depend on them more than likely.

I have the same typical problem. I will be driving and if I let off the gas there will be no backpressure from the engine, its almost as if I am still pressing on the gas. Every now and then the car will feel like something connects and the engine will start to slow the car down, the it will quit and start to go again. But the whole sequence only lasts for like 2 sec (kinda feels like the car is hiccuping) **WIERD** also when I pull up to a light my car will rev at a little over 2K!! for like a good 15-20 secs then finally the rpms will drop all the way down almost killing the car (sometimes the care actually dies) before it recovers and starts ideling correctly. Like hershey said there is a lot of different problems that can cause this, especially me haveing a S/C I have so many hoses and special tunes and extra work done (none of which was done by me)..Something that might be contributing to my ideling problems is that I can hear a sort of knocking noise coming from the engine. I contacted the previous owner and he stated that it was an exhaust leak. Does this sound likely to you guys? I read on the internet that if you have an exhaust leak you can also have ideling and driving problems...
