Help with Carburetor, running rich

It's an 85 GT, carb'd. I recently replaced some of my exhaust components, I don't have emissions testing, so removed smog equipment, and after hard acceleration I can hear some backfiring in the exhaust. I hope it's excess fuel burning in there. I have no idea how to work on a carburetor though. As far as I know everything is stock (bought it at 160k miles so who knows). Any help is appreciated.

my first piece of advice is to check you timing. make sure its right then if it is running rich you will smell the gas. and depending on the carb and the size of it (let us know) we can go from there.

Your backfire sounds like late ign. timing to me bump your timing to 12 degrees with the vac. advance hose off dis. then reattach it. What exhaust components did you replace some mufflers are prone to making such sounds. Does your car still have the factory Ford/Holley?

I haven't touched the timing (owned the car for 25k miles). Reading through the Haynes manual, it sounds like I have to remove the water pump to access the timing chain. Is there an easier way to check it? I'll have to wait until I have a day off to do so then.
The carburetor is stock. I removed a valve that goes between the Y pipe and the drivers side header, and the catalytic converter. Mufflers are stock.
The backfiring occurs after I let off the gas after hard acceleration, probably 2-3 pops, and doesn't happen every time. It happens with about the same frequency when the car is hot and cold, and sounds like it's happening before the mufflers, in the exhaust pipe.

Exhaust pops like that usually mean you're sucking air into the exhaust. Did you plug the hole in the cats after you pulled the smog pump? Check the header to pipe flange too.

you dont check your timing by the timing chain. you check it with a timing light and the marks on the balancer. just chalk the 10* mark on the balancer hook + to + on the battery and - to - then plave the other lead around the #1 wire turn on your car and point the light at the balancer smash the trigger and see if the white chalk mark is close to thje pointer.

this is all assuming you havent removed the dizzy before and restabbed it wrong and your pointer is still on your motor.
