I was in the process of changing out my wheels, and I had the rear lifted and the transmission in 1st gear, when I began to re-tighten the lugs my rear axles started to spin!!!! I was in shock! What's the deal with my transmission?

That's normal.....if you want the rear wheels to lock, pull the ebrake or lift one side at a time

How is that normal? If the tranny is in gear the wheels shouldnt move at all, unless he caused it to pop outta gear...

The wheels will rotate forward in gear.

But doesn't that require the entire rotating assembly (motor) to turn? And if that's the case, then why would you put it in gear when you park it as a safeguard?

Were the wheels turning the same direction, or opposite directions?

If the car is off and rolling is the motor rotating?

I understand what your saying you put it in gear when you leave the car because the pressure keeps it from rolling. When I put my back end in the air though, no pun intended, the back wheels spin together. As why @Rick 91GT said e-brake or one side at a time.

Which is what the OP and I are trying to figure out...shouldn't the tranny being in gear keep the tires from moving? I mean, if the tires move then the drive shaft moves, which then turns the tranny, but it shouldn't since it's in gear, Imma try this when I get home now... cuz all the sudden I'm feeling dumb for some reason...

So I need to do some more searching, but I lifted mine up in gear and the tires spun in opposite directions. ..from what I've found so far, it has something to do with having a posi or open rear...

Spinning in opposite direction is ok it's a limited slip differential. If not you would be chirping with every turn like a locker type.

You doing one wheel burnouts? If so you will need to repack your diff with new clutches.

For this to happen, assuming the trans is in gear and the clutch is engaged, the flywheel would need to turn over.

This is very easy to do by turning the rear wheels. Usually 1st and R are the hardest to do however. 5th gear should be the easiest.

To confirm, pop your hood and do this. Does the engine turn over?

If not...clutch is prob slipping
