A little history: When bought my car I installed the flowmaster 40 series mufflers (not deltaflow). After driving with these mufflers for a couple months, I decided they were too loud, and droned excessively for my taste. I then purchased borla XR1's hoping for a unique & quiet sound. Nope. While the XR1 sounds different outside, they sound the same as the flows on the inside, and the exhaust volume didn't change. I just searched my garage for the my stock mufflers, but they are MIA. So my question is what mufflers can I buy that are fairly quiet? I don't mind some noise, but I'd like to start my car and not hear the exhaust explosion. Would a flowmaster 3-chamber be the ticket? Yeah, I must be getting old.

Yeah, not a common request huh. I know.. . I like hearing my exhaust at times, but I don't want my entire interior pulsing with exhaust notes.

I just read up on the flowmaster 30 series, which claims to keep an aggressive sound with less interior noise - that is what I'm looking for. Do you think the magnaflow would also accomplish this too?.. and do they sound unique from the flows?

I have the three chamber flomasters. 50 series delta flows. i am very happy with them. THey can make some noise if i want them too but are quiet while cruising if you want them to be. there is a little drone but the interior resonance is'nt bad at all nothing at all like to 40 series. THey have a very deep throaty sound on the outside of the car. but not loud. Also the magnaflows are pretty quite inside the car. BUt they have a different sound than the flows obviously. They are a packed mufler so they sound like one.

I had Flowmaster 40's on my car when I bought it and got really tired of the noise and drone. I just replaced them with the Steeda Cat-back (made by Borla) and I am very pleased with the sound. It has a darker, throatier sound at idle but really roars at WOT! And the drone is almost completely gone! BTW, isn't the XR1 some kind of 'racing exhaust'? Probably good for HP but may not be the most quiet system around?

Where in California are you located? I still have my stock mufflers. If you want them you can have them.

what's this world coming to when someone wants a quieter sound from their exaust????
If you like the sound of flows, get the 3 chambers.

I'm in the east bay. I appreciate the offer, and I'll PM you if I decide to go stock. I'm kind of leaning towards the 30 series flowmaster, but from the charts the 50 series is even quieter. I dunno.. magnaflow sounds tempting, but I'm against borla at this point. To answer the above question the XR1 are a race series muffler. You may see them on ebay soon .

Agreed! Mine is really quiet at idle but can makes some noise when squeezed. But it's not excessive by any means...and I'm no youngster either.

Wow, you think your exhaust is too loud? I'd hate to see you ride in a car with an O/R Midpipe. You need to find some Lincoln TownCar or Mark VIII mufflers, they seem to quiet the 4.6 down.

My GT had Flowmaster 40s on her when I got her. Got tired of the drone, so I put on Magnaflow Magnapacks, not as much drone. Put on offroad h-pipe on her and now she's super loud.

That's just it.. lately I've driven a few fast & quiet cars and I really liked picking up speed quickly but without everyone knowing I'm on the throttle. It's nice flying stealth, but being that it's a Mustang I guess it should make a little sound. I've already had off-road pipes, turn downs, etc on my 5.0. I think I just need a break from loud. My factory h-pipe is still on the car, but with 2 1/2 pipes and XR1's it's pretty loud. Fun sometimes, but other times I wish I could drop the decibles a bit. I've decided I don't want it factory quiet, but definitely quieter than it is now. Thanks for all the input so far.

Three chamber flows should fulfill that for you. I think you should be happy with those.

Delta Flow 40 series, off-road H. Love the combo, as it roars only when it needs to.

The regular magnaflow mufflers would be a good choice. I had a Magnaflow cat-back with the stock h-pipe. It was pretty quiet at startup, idle and cruising with a nice growl at WOT. Plus the 3.5" SS tips look great.

3 chambers(Delta 50's) own in the quiet dept. No Drone in excess of stock with the 50's and a stock h-pipe,(FYI, adding a Cai, or x/h pipe will cause drone from this muffler.

All of my friends that arent mustang people always ask me whats wrong with Certain stangs they sound weird(they all have Magnaflow stickers on the window(a different post topic )). It sounds farty

Steedas sleeper mufflers are quite like the 50's everything else is louder, or sounds weird.
