help with smoke problem

Im looking at buying a 95 gt that was rebuilt a little while ago and on startup it smoked and went away. While I was driving it when I got on it it smoked some too. The owner says that its not timed rigth since he replaced the dizzy and the balancer has more than 1 mark on it. It also had some detonation. My question is could it being off time do this or it running too rich?

You posted a Tech question in Talk - you get more good answers if you post it in Tech

Blue smoke = oil bad rings or valve guides.
White smoke = water leaking into the intake or bad head gasket
Black smoke = bad O2 sensors, or bad fuel injectors, or bad fuel pressure regulator.

Running too rich will not cause detonation.

If you are not good with mechanical stuff, have a reputable mechanic check out the car before you buy it. If you have a timing light, compression gauge and basic hand tools, check it out yourself.

Would the timing being off do this. He put a msd dizzy on but sais the balancer had more than 1 mark on it so he didnt know if ti was timed right. That would also cause the detonation right?

Could be - the 94-95's seem to be more picky about the timing. Have it fixed before you buy the car.

Any info on how to properly install a distibuter? I know it has to be at tdc right? Hes going to be putting the stock one in it and I want to make sure its done right.

Whoa.... if smoke on start and then goes away.. possible valve guide seals!! Smoke under power.. again seals and possible rings.. check the ign timing and if it is good.. look into seals.. just a guess!!

I'm assuming that you are talking about blue smoke on startup and hard accell?! If it is blue smoke then its not going to be fixed by altering the timing. You either have a valve seal problem or a ring issue. Definately not something i want to see when im looking at buying a mustang...especially if it was already rebuilt. Probably a poor rebuilt or inferior parts. The detontation problem is common with SN's. I have found that the MAF element being dirty exacerbates the problem...and generally if the timing is advanced any further than 12* detontation is clearly present esepcially at high rpm or in hot temperatures. I might dare to say you should start looking at other cars.
