Help with starter

The starter is virtualy identical to the one i took out, its regular oem ford style. I replaced it because the old starter was making horrendous sounds on startup (grinds/pops)
Alright well I pulled the new starter out, had it checked, and its fine. Interestingly, the old starter was fine too. I checked the flywheel, and it seems to be fine (not missing any teeth or anything) So I got my money back for the new starter and now i'm stumped as to what to do. Before, when I tried to start the car, the starter would make horrible sounds (griding/popping) every once in a while, then finally start after I turned the key enough times. So whats wrong with it?

Sounds more like electrical issuez. Did you check to make sure you hooked up the little spade connector to the bendix on the starter (little cylinder on top of starter). This is what engages the teeth of the starter to the flywheel. If this isnt "powered" up the starter will just spin aimlessly. Also check you solenoid to see if it working properly or just replace it, not that expensive.
No, I had it tested, its fine, hell the old one was fine. Something else is wrong.
As for the little spade, I only have one wire coming down to the starter? The postive lead then I assume it grounds to the block.
