I raced my friend's auto 97 Camaro Z28 last night, we raced twice.. both times she got me on take off, but as soon as i got into second and hooked i pulled hard on her.. i passed her very easily, but on take off she usually has about 1/2-1 car lengths on me. how can i take off better to make it more even of a take off?

make sure that you practice slipping your clutch(let it out just enough to move and so you wont spin your tires and when you feel that you have traction, pop the clutch out fully and floor it....if you can get this mastered(or comfortable with it) then you will be able to launch at about 3k-4k rpms and not spin(or barely spin)...
just practice and you will be ok

i know what you mean and you will get it
i can slip it decently when i am practicing by myself but when i am about to race, i get a little jittery and sometimes mess up...
good luck with it

she's got a moroso cai, and flowmaster catback.. and from her take off and how it feels when i drive it, i think it may have some aftermarket gears in it. everytime i get into a race, ESPECIALLY this one since we've been wantin to race for 2 months to see which is faster, i always get anxious and just dump the clutch.. it took me halfway thru 2nd to get traction.. so she was all the way thru the intersection b4 i was halfway.. but as soon as i hooked, i pulled reeeaallyyyy hard on her.. then thru half of 3rd we ran dead even and after that my car started pullin on her bad. right as i got window-to-window she let off and said she won.. which pissed me off because i was coming up hard and i was about to run off and leave her.. she did it both times. so if i can get traction on takeoff i can walk it, but it's hard for me to

one other thing to add.. with me driving my car, i can only get it to do a 12.0 in the 1000 ft, but with my buddy driving it he can get it to do an 11.55.. but if we get traction, i know it'll do all of an 11.3.. but that's only a 1000 ft, since we dont have a 1/4 track around here. so if i can get the hang of this car, i'll be able to do a lot better

Instead of racing on the street take it to the track, it might give you an advantage or her the advantage.

stock LT1 vs stock GT can be a drivers race, so they say. I raced one when I was stock and barely pulled enough to win. With your mods winning won't be an issue once you get your launch down I agree with what was said earlier.. take it to the track! That way you can see your 60ft time and so forth and try different things out and see the results.

yah, her's is an automatic.

I didn't know about the different powerband for the LT1's and the LS1's. I'm not much into the whole camaro thing, I dont particularly like them, only that one pretty much. How is the powerband for the LT1?

Today I talked to her and she told me she wanted to race me at the track so we can see our times because now after our race she wants to see what her car can do, what times she can get. I seem to be doin better at the track than the streets now, i dunno how tho.

I know they say the '97 model camaros have a few different factory hp's which include: (for the V8's) 285, 305, 310 hp. So I know her's isnt the 310, but i was wondering if it was the 305 or 285? It's got 130,000 miles on it or so, and it's still runnin fast enough to do that good against me, and my car dynoes at about 260 or so to the rear wheels..

LT1s were rated at 285, although they were underrated. However they had several problems like power falling off fast past 5k and I believe floating valves. With some head work and the internals balanced they'll hold off an LS1 easily.

so about how much hp should she be running to the crank with the flowmaster 40 series catback and the moroso cai?

I was thinking that i was gonna walk all over that car, but traction played a trick on me and favored her last night.. now it's making my car look bad because she's telling everyone she whipped my ass really bad, when all she had was abotu a car length on takeoff and then i was catching up after i finally hooked. i did admit that she had some hella takeoff with that thing, it surprised me really bad. we each had a friend with us so we could make sure the other wasnt gonna go lie about it. i gave it to her, altho she did play cheap and let off right as i was about to pass her.

But, how are the powerbands on those LT1's? Compared to 99-04 GT's?

Hmm....most stock ones put down about 285 rwhp/310 rwtq, but their torque curve is a lot broader than ours.
