If anybody out there has installed a Flaming River tilt steering column and can help I'd appreciate it..

I just received my FR tilt steering column for my 66 along with the 64 - 67 long-shaft steering box installation kit. The problem is, the instructions simply explain how to remove the old steering column and not much more.

What do I do with the old steering shaft that is permenantly affixed to the steering box? Do I have to dis-assemble my steering box to remove the old shaft? And if so, what do I do with this installation kit I purchased for the 64 - 67 long-shaft steering box? All the kit consists of is basically a u-joint and a wiring harness adapter. Also, the u-joint doesn't look right becuase it only has threaded holes on one end, how is the other end supposed to stay secured to whatever it attaches to?

Any comments (and pics) would be appreciated!!

On long shaft cars you need to cut the shaft giving enough room to shave down the ends and create a double d connection to attach to the given ujoint.

I have a feeling you're missing some of the instructions as this would be something that is imperative to know.

Call FR and see if they have more detailed inst.

Thanks alot for the help.

However, there is only one problem - the U-joint they sent me is DD on one end (the end that connects to the new steering column/shaft) and smooth/round on the other end (the end that connects to the old shaft). I figure it should be welded to the old shaft, but they put a disclaimer in the package saying not to weld it b/c it weakens the joints. Seems kinda wierd.. If it is just supposed to be welded (no splines, or DD machining), is it really safe for street use?

I would see if they have one that is DD in the old shaft diameter size and still keep the column the same size and create the DD end on the shaft. I know there is a set nut, but the only way I would do it is with the DD or a keyway.

I just called Flaming River and they said to drill a hole through the smooth/round end of the u-joint and the end of the old steering shaft and secure it with a grade-8 bolt. Sounds simple enough.
