Ford Mercon is what's specified. Basically any of the Mercon/Dextron III ATF fluids are acceptable. Synthetic or not is up to you, but this is an area I've always just gone with the dino fluid instead. It takes 2.8 quarts, and the easiest way to fill it is by pouring it in through the shifter hole. Pull your fill plug and put a drain pan underneath, so when it starts to come out the fill, you know it's full.

You are AWESOME! thank you...So basically, while the shifter is out, just pour on in there, and it'll drain down into the bottom? i've got a drip pan, so the pulling the plug and all that is no biggy. the tranny was rebuilt, so it's bone empty right now. thanks for the help...

Remember there is a drain AND a fill plug. use a 3/8 socket extension to remove
the upper plug. and don't overtighten putting back in. Aluminum is fragile.
snug is good.

I would consult with whomever rebuilt the box (if there is a warranty). That eliminates possible issues for you if something arises.
I have seen some shops that recommend fluids other than Mercon.

And since it's a dry-fill, it might take a little more fluid than specified.

Good luck.
