Help with Tune Up!!

I bought my 94 GT 5-speed back in September. Its stock with 127,000. When I got it needed a good tune up, so I changed the oil, fuel filter, oil filter, spark plugs, and air filter. I checked the brake pads, and rotors, and the looked good. BTW, I replaced everything with motocraft parts. I didn’t change the plug wires (they looked fairly new, but I'm not sure), oxygen sensors, distributor cap, or anything else. I'm having quite a bit of hesitation, and surging. I was hoping that getting a new distributor cap and oxygen sensors would cure my problem. I'm also going to clean the MAF, i'd say i'd get improvements from it. I was wondering if there was anything else I needed to do. I have a manual and I was wondering if it would help to change the tranny fluid?

I doubt the car was maintained as it should be, so I think it would be a good idea to buy these parts, before starting to mod my car.

Yeah, when I got my car it was horredously slow. It pissed me off so bad because it was such a dog and I had no idea why. I just assumed that a heavy stock vert with 2.73s was that slow. However when someone off stangnet finally clued me in on cleaning the MAF...WOW. It was sooooo dirty. After I cleaned it my car honestly felt like it had an HP gain of around 50+ horse. It was seriously that bad.

Well i went from a V6 stang to a V8 and its fast, but i dont feel like its at its full potential. I'm excited to see if it will make that big of a diff on my car, i might do it as soon as i get home from school. About how long will it take? And my car has 127,000, and i doubt its never been cleaned. Do you think its due for one??? :D

Whether or not its due for one all depends. It may have never been cleaned and yet still wont be that dirty. I cleaned mine for the first time around 70,000 miles and it was filthy. It really just depends. Yours may be fine.

I can clean mine in around 10 minutes from the time I open my hood but if its your first time it may take like 30 minutes to figure out how everything comes apart and all.

yea, i checked my dist cap, and its prety carbon'd up. I'm gonna replace that. I've got some money from my birthday, any suggestions on what to get? I've got around $150. I was thinking headlights...i dunno

Good idea, could you post a link to the site that carries those, i've never heard of those

Sorry I dont have a link but I got mine from D&D Motorsports in Detroit. Google it I guess.

It is a Steeda tri-ax that D&D anodizes purple and sells it as a d&d shifter for $150 which you will NEVER find a tri-ax for. BTW, they roll off the assembly line with tri-ax's. Even says tri-ax on the handle.

Definately replace the spark plug wires as well. They may look new, but you never know since you just bought the car.

You said the car hesitates when when it's cold, right? What about when the car warms up.

If the car doesn't have any problems when it's warm, then your O2 sensors are functioning 100%. Don't waste the money.

When the motor is cold, the computer ignores the O2 sensors. It uses the MAF, ECT & IAT sensors to calculate the a/f ratio & spark advance.

If it only happens when it's cold, then I would replace the IAT sensor & the ECT sensor. They are cheap, and the likely cause.

P.S. How exactly did you clean the MAF? Did you actually take the sensor out of the housing and clean it with q-tips & electrical cleaner? If you didn't, you need to do it again. Just spraying carb cleaner at the MAF element won't clean it 100%. Trust me, from experience. Here is a link. http://www.muscularmustangs.com/maf.html The Torx bit you need to remove the element is a T-20 with the hole in the middle. Autozone has it for 3-4 bucks.

I took the sensor out, and cleaned it with a q-tip and alchohol. I'm pretty sure it surges and hesitates at warm, anc cold temp. What about these ECT and IAT sensors, i've never heard of those, Please inform me

Bout mine in august with 123k miles on it. Buddy and me did a complete tune up, the plugs were original, the wires looked good but were origina, cap and rotor had been replaced and I also put in the Accel coil. What a difference. That simple $100 tune up was worth around 100 HP as the car would miss very badly above 1500 RPM with any kind of load on it. So I would finish what you started (do the carp/rotor and wires at a minimum)... all of it is cheap enough and may make a huge difference.

Mines in need of a tune up bad. I'm going to check plugs and clean the filter and m/a tomorrow. Going to drop the juice down to the 75 shot and bump the timing for all it's worth and gap the plugs where they should be. I'm hoping my surging problem goes away.... if not, then I'll be looking at the sensors.

What brand of wires do you guys recommend? I don't want to cut my own but I don't want to pay a lot either. It's Christmas saving time. I've heard FMS wires = :notnice:
