Help with wheel locks.

When I purchased my car it never crossed my mind that I needed to get the key for the wheellocks on the car. I went back to the dealer and he said he didn't have a set when he bought the car. So I'm kind of at a stand still on changin the brakes shocks and tires.

Parts store. Try the HELP section. Often, you can find places that have several keys on a rack. It probably wouldn't hurt you to call around first, to see who carries these items.

Are they the original locks? I know my local Ford dealer (Tommie Vaughn Ford) has a master set of keys for all the Ford locks (McGuard I think). They were able to remove my old set of original locks and a subsequent set of SN95 locks from my car when I lost the keys. They didn't even charge me for it.

If that won't work, you can try to use a socket that is almost a fit on the locks. Hammer it on and use your rachet to remove the socket and lug. I got 3 removed with one socket this way before it was worn out, and had to find another socket for the 4th one. If you use a Craftsman socket, then take it back to Sears and get a new one.

Go to Ford and ask them yo use their master keys if they are the OEM locks. Thenhave them order you a replacment or bring 4 regular lugs with you and buy a new set of locking lugs...or 4 sets

Yup. Most dealers have a master set and they will simply sell you the one you need out of the kit, and order a replacement for themselves.

they also sell tools/special sockets for removing wheel locks, you smack them on with a hamer, then take an impact gun or breaker bar to it and it will come off. the socket wont mess up or anything because it is designed for removing broken/lost keys wheel locks.

If they bitch or give you trouble, just mention that you or a family member was considering a new explorer from them, but now you will tell them to go to some other dealership.


That line usually works everytime someone at my local Ford dealership starts giving me the brushoff.

exactly. after working at discount tire and taking off countless wheel locks for customers who lost their keys i can tell you its a piece of cake. Any wheel lock can be taken off with a socket, hammer, and an impact. To tell you the truth, people like to feel safe about their wheels with locks but wheel looks will only slow a crook down, any good crook can take them off.

Weld the wheels on.


For someone to steal them, they are going to need a portable generator and a grinder

If worse comes to worse, weld a bead down opposite sides of the wheel lock and then off it with a pair of vice grips.
