I was running my cobra yesterday afternoon, (I drive it once a week ) and got on it pretty good getting on the freeway, so I shift to third gear and run it up to 6000 rpm's and it starts to bellow out smoke? I even had it comming through my vents! It smelled like burning oil, so I hit the clutch right away, and come to a stop on the side of the road, pop the hood and theres no oil anywhere??? Checked the dipstick, oil is still full and clean, Start the car and it starts perfect, idles perfect, and has no smoke? I know when it detonates the smoke that comes out is black, and has a distinct smell, and this was not it. My car has the stock heads back on right now, so I was wondering if it could be a valve seal or guide, or even floating valves, or (hope not) bad rings. Any other things I should be looking for? I'm going to check compression today and if thats all good a leak down. Thanks

Tony

Looks like you have had the heads off recently

Maybe you popped a head gasket

Was the smoke white

No water in the oil, no overheating, nothing. Actually runs perfect still. Thats why I was thinking valve seals or guides. Well looks like I have to tear into it after doing a little more testing.

What's the possibility of burning through some crud in the gas tank? it seems pretty random....

Ok all cylinders had between 150 - 160 psi accept for number 1 it had 138. That still didnt throw up any flags, What did throw a flag was the fact that all the plugs wreaked of gas and were physically wet with gas... My fuel pressure is still steady at 36 psi, so now i'm a little confused. I'm knew it was running rich (stock heads tuned for AFR's) but it's not too alarming. I would rather it be a little fat instead of lean. So hmmm..... little more help.

I didnt read this all so I mighta' missed the boat, but I have an oddball thought. If your crankcase ventillation is not up to par, those revs really put a burden on it. If there is a restriction, the pressure will start coming out seals. I once had a similar issue on another car. There was blowby and oil coming out the dizzy o-ring and it was hitting the exhaust. Smoke city.

The smoke might have been blown out behind the car so look like it came out the tails. Just something to check/consider.

Good luck.

Thanks hiss, I had just changed the pcv, as well as a few other tune up stuff, so I'll check the rest of the vent system.

Well as you all know I did the comp check, and nothing out of the ordinary, Changed the plugs put new wires on, checked the oil again, drove it. It felt really good, so today going to work decided to drive it; Driving perfect, not on it, I decide to get it into the rpm's for a little test, so I get it to 4k and here comes the smoke again but this time with a major hesitation, mind you I am only at half throttle, so it wasnt a WOT blast through the gears it was a gradual 4th gear rpm chase. Now I dont wanna drive the car at all. There are no pings or knocks, and the oil is still clean and full... I'm really confused. I think i'm gonna break down and take it in to my friend and get them to test it.

Any input guys? What the hell could this be. Also it has 75k miles on it.

What color is the smoke? Blueish-gray would indicate burning oil (likely bow-by), but if its dark drown or black, it would seem your motor's running really really rich. The wet plugs, hesitation and smoke would all point to this. What size injectors are you running? I'd say it shouldn't be driven like that until you find out what the problem is, or your piston rings might never forgive you. Here's a thought.... have you checked for any trouble codes?

no codes, its a dark grey smoke, and deffinately smells like oil. Its got the stock #24 injectors, and has never done this before. The stock heads have been on for quite a while now, (8 months) and it has been drivin 1 or 2 times a week. So this is a new problem. And its not going to be drivin at all...

Tough call... Just the fact that you get smoke through the vents makes me think its an exterior oil leak. All that comes to mind in that scenario is the pcv system possibly having a clog and causing oil to come out somewhere like Hissin mentioned. Is there any oil on the back of the lower intake by the pcv valve? Check the pvc system hoses for any cracks or signs of oil inside. Might want to check inside the throttle body and/or upper intake for signs of oil getting in that way (from the pcv hose) and getting burned up.

I checked the pcv a little while ago but nothing out of the ordinary there, tho that makes cense it still wouldnt explain the hesitation? And when it first happened I thought it was from the outside of the engine as well because of the smoke from the vents. I'm soooo confused that I'm ready to tear it down to bare block.
