I took out my 66 mustang 289, 2bbl for a ride with the kids and it stalled. Sounds like a carb issue but I got back home so how. It would back fire when I tried to start but I was able to keep getting it to run. When I got home I was trying to start again when suddenly it back fired so loud that my muffler can exploded open. What can cause this to back fire to the point that it would do this. Please help!

Fuel in the exhaust, which is not backfiring. Likely your ignition needs work.

question

I'm a newbie.... What do you mean by ignition? I just changed my ignition switch, would that be it?

Points, condenser, wires, plugs, like that.

WOW was that thing loaded up.

You def have 1 of 2 problems. Ignition not firing or carb pouring way too much fuel. Has it been sitting for a while?

Replace the points & condensor in the distributor with an electronic conversion module.(Pertronix,
Mallory, etc, all make these things) Then do a complete tuneup (new plugs, wires, coil, distributor cap & rotor) Reset the ignition timing to 10-14* BTDC. Then run it and see if there's still a problem.

While you are at it, replace the timing gear set....

More than likely it's in the ignition (points etc) but I bet it's the ignition timing, sounds like it's way off.

My friends 70 Mustang did that once to a brand new pair of Cherry Bomb Turbo mufflers. It turned out to be an issue with the carb and the timing. I don't remember exactly what was wrong.

Bad timing will back fire back through the carb. Too much fuel or weak ignition will back fire through the exhaust.

?????

Does that mean my coil is bad?? I changed my ignition switch because the car would only start if I held the key in the start position. When I let go it would shut down. Well yesterday I tried to start again and the new ignition switch is also doing the same thing.

I'm not sure if your year has a neutral safety switch - but in my 1970 if the car would only start in start position and die when it goes to run. It was the neutral safety switch. What you described is a common problem when it goes out - you can bypass by jumping wires to test it out.

Changed starter relay

Ok, I changed the starter relay and everything seems fine now. I also checked my cables and one of them seemed loose. I took her out yesterday and she an perfect. Hopefully that was it. Thanks for all your help and sugestions.
