Hey I've just got a couple questions about the foxbody 5.0s. My first is... are the trannies in the 88's and 89's really bad? I've been told this by many people. Also, how long to the engines typically last on these babies? I have a chance to get an 88GT with 95K on it and a 5spd tranny for $3,000, does that sound about right? Here's a link just incase
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.j...th&advanced=&isp=y&start_year=1981&cardist=11

Finally, are there any nice aftermarket trannies out there for these cars? Maybe a 6spd!?!? :D

Thanks in advace to anyone who answers,

Brandon

the price is a bit steep unless that car is perfecly straight and clean inside and out.

as far as the transes, don't worry about. I have friends that are runnin high to mid 11's on the stock t-5

Theres many 5.0's on the rd with well over 100k it all depends on how well it's taken care of.

The trannys are ok as long as your not power shifting. If your a hard shifter a aftermarket shifter is what you need before you start slaming gears. Don't wana bend a fork.

I'd try to talk the price down alittle but thats just me. I've seen stock stangs sold on lots around here for upwards of 6grand.
These cars were not even repainted.I've gotten to where I don't even stop a car lots anymore to look at mustangs. Private sellers is the way to buy these cars around my neck of the woods.

K, thanks for the replies. Do you guys think $2600 is a good price for it? I think I could definetly get him down to that. Anyways I called him up and he said it's being kept at his yard so that kinda scared me, and I'll be seeing it in person tomorrow, so I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks again,

Brandon

I don't think the price is all that bad. As for the trannys it's a craps shoot. It all depends on how the car has been treated. Drive it and see how it feels. The miles seem low which is a good thing. There is a lot of life left in that old 5.0

Yeah the price didn't seem too bad to me either, but then again, I don't really know what they go for. You peeps really think 95K miles is low? Seems high to me! I know I'm posting a lot, but I'm just really exited to go see it :nice: I just lost my chance with a 90GT that had 61K on it... $4,500 and I had cash to do it... some other guy came first though... I guess it was a little expensive anyways.

seeing it in person will tell the story. and the price thing is entirely regional - around here if that car was in halfway decent shape, it would be sold already.
and with the trans, etc, as others said, i would worry about the owner and how he drove it than if the factory trans, etc was weaker that year. in other words, i would take a lesser rated T5 driven nicely than a G force that was powershifted every shift.
good luck with it.

You know what.... that license plate thingy... if you look a little lower on the bumper it looks like it was hit there. Could be trying to hide the damage? Maybe he just thought it looked badass....

Thanks,
Brandon

i dont think those miles are high at all. remember, it is an 18 year old car (model year coming out mid year the year previous). 100K miles/18 years is 5000-6000 miles per year - nothin!

good luck and let us know how it looks. :nice:

Damn, I paid 4,800 for my stang with 95,000 miles... Totally stock save for gears and flowmasters. I thought the price I paid was fair. In my area cars are very prone to rust and finding a good fox body is next to impossible and if you do they are 6,000+.

What sold me on my car was the MINT grey interior... Im talking, I owned a 2003 celica before the stang, and the stangs interior was in just as good condition. I've owned 2 other fox bodies before this one and both had broken door bezels, faded red interior (that color seems to fade easily), broken ash tray door, etc. Needless to say, I fell in love with the mint interior of my stang.

In my opinion, if that car is as nice in person as in the picture, and the interior is decent I would whip out the 3G's and drive away. :nice:

Well I checked it out and it was pretty beat. It had a new paint job that wasn't done very well, the rear bumper was broken, the front one was all scratched up. The interior was alright, a few tears here and there. Anyways, I decided not to take it, but rather wait till a good one decides to show itself. I'm checking out a modded 90GT tomorrow so keep your fingers crossed!

Peace,
Brandon
