alright i have been saving money and calling my connections and i believe i am gettin close to painting my car.

i should be ordering the 96-98 cobra kit from 50resto and thats goin to first my bumper and hood problem

now all i need to know is wat kinda paint and prep stuff i should use

i have a guy that does repair work on cars at a local dealership and he will tape the car and spray it for $150 but i got to prep the car and buy the paint and primer

i was just looking for some guys input who have done this before

wat name brand paint should i get and is there any certain type of paper i need to use to sand the car down

and i want to stay close to my opal frost color but is there anyone out there with a custom paint job with maybe a silver and some type of flake in it or something
i was just wanting to do something to make the paint stick out a little more but stil stay with a solid silver base

and i didnt know if this should have went in talk or tech i figured talk because i'm not asking how to do it just wat stuff to lean towards and stay away from and maybe some color ideas

Deep forrest Green is the only logical solution.

Ive heard that DuPont has great automotive paint. I work at Sherwin-Williams, but we dont sell automotive paint at my store, and Ive heard its pretty good too.

My dad has his stang apinted with paint from Dupont and its exellent. I would recommend it.

I would stick with Dupont (Chromabase) or PPG (?). See what the guy that is shooting your car likes. I have been around Dupont paint all my life and know that there are characteristics that guys get used to shooting. I would rather have PPG paint on my car, if the guy that was spraying it liked it better than Dupont. (My dad won't shoot PPG.)

I did OF on the bottom and black on the top. Worked out well. You can't do that, though. Been taken. There is really no limit to what you can do with base/clear systems.

Like everyone else said Dupont Chromabase. Last two stangs Ive had were painted with chromabase. I have also heard good Things about PPG.

my dad's company has been using dupont forever and i love there stuff def go that route....if you can afford it get house of kolors there stuff unbelieveable but you must be commited to a whole line ....dont bargan shop for clear with one company and base with another and reducers and such.... but talk to ypur painter first to see what he has been using...every brand has different ratios like 2:1:1 or 4:1:1 so see what your painter has been spraying and make sure its not crap paint if he sprays cheap **** find someone else to blast your car since your doing all the back breaking labor anyways

H.O.C ive seen and heard different things about but dupont is the way to go.... i always liked performance white.... or the deep purple that they had on probes... wild orchad... i will own one in this collor some time... mustang or probe... always had a thing for metalic purple...

just my opinion but i would look to find a pro to show you how to prep the car. the biggest part of painting a car is the prep work, any joe schmo can spray a car, the proof is in the pudding so to speak.

i know a guy that has been goin to a tech school for auto body and he's goin to be helping me do the prep and my girlfriends dad has painted a couple of older cars and they looked pretty good and he might be able to help...

i would pay a pro to do the job but there is no way i can afford it expecially after the last "pro" i got to do the work really ripped me off about 2 grand. its taking me this long to get the cash to fix the job he did minimum wage sucks

i'll talk to the painter in the next week or so and set up a date with him to paint my car and i'll ask him wat paint he likes to spray i'm hoping since he does work for the ford dealership that he will be decent and if not it shouldnt cost too much to get another shop to spray it

2 grand prep work whoa you got taken on a ride dude...as stated about anybody can spray its the prep that makes a paint job...thats why you finding painters all the time that want you to do the prep....it would be like me having a home owner running all the wires and me coming in to hook them all up lol....taking the easy job. if all he has ever painted for was ford he might not be to familiar with dupont so talk to him and if hes not really ever sprayed it find another guy a diff. painter shouldn't cost to much more or any because as stated all the hard work will be done ..painters love a preped car.

ok the guy that says he'll paint my car likes House of Kolor paint
is this any good?? should i find another guy to do the job??

and about the cobra kit
i dont know if i like the 96-98 hood
i know i want to go with a cobra front bumper
so who all has gotten a cobra bumper from 50resto.com
they carry a ford production and there "version" of the bumper has anyone gotten their version if so how was the quality???should i just spend the extra cash and get the ford one??

well a cobra r hood is a great addition...house of kolor is amazing paint but you are going to be paying a ton for everything you need...hope you got a big check book

when u said expensive how much are you talking about i was hoping to spend 500-700 on paint and primer is this a reasonable hope or should i plan to spend more

hok will be more you cant cheap out anywhere...every product must be from there line or it wont lay down right...you have to do your primer 3 coats of base color 3 coats of top color and 3 layers of clear so first find where you can buy it and then get ready to spend some dough....

when i sold autoparts for a living i was putting together a paint package for a supercoupe and his paint package came to i believe 900 bucks..

alright then it will just take alittle longer to save up (as long as its worth the money i dont mind spending it)

trav you seem to know alot about painting cars how much should i plan on spending on prep supplies

and as for the bumper since i'm spending the extra on the paint i guess i shouldnt get a cheaper bumper so i'm goin to order the ford oem cobra bumper this week

i hope it turns out good since i'm puttin the extra cash into it

o and is it goin to cost alot more if i want anything special in the paint..
i was thinking about a blue or pearl sparkle in the opal frost

has anyone seen a cobra bumper on an opal frost car...i dont think i have (does it look ok??)

HOK offers a pearl that can be added to the paint or put into the clear either way it looks good...it can look good either way...it seems to be best if added to the first layer of clear then 2 other coats of just clear laid over it

bumper choices anythings fine as long as its not fiberglass...

i would spend as much money as it needed to make it turn out correct...with that being said is this car going to be your for a very long time....its not worth putting all the extra money in the paint if in two years you plan on getting rid of the car....you can also get just the HOK flake i mention and do it in the clear as mentioned... it dosent need to be in hok clear or anything...dupont is just as good and can save you money a good amount but remember it must be something your painter is familiar with if he brouhgt up hok then that must be something he is good at...there are so many steps to a hok paintjob and it must be wet sanded so make sure he does that for you. just remember with that type of money in the paint your going to want your prep to be perfect...you can have beautiful paint sprayed over a crap prep and then what do you do??

no this is my first car and like my dads 66 coupe(its sittin in the backyard with faded paint and a dead transmission)this car will be with me from now on

i'm just tryin to get everything right on the body work i want it to look amazing and last a long time because this car really is my baby and i want to do it right
