I have an 88 5.0. The starter is shot, I believe from the heat. I have done alot of research and found I can use a starter out of a newer 5.0. I bought a 95 starter with a lifetime warranty today, and want to install it this weekend. I am aware of the rewiring that needs to be done and I got that covered. My consern is the original starter's gear was center on the end were the newer starter is offset. Also I believe the original gear was 9 tooth were as the new one is 10 tooth. I do not want to eat up my flywheel and I am going to beat up the starter getting it past my headers, so I just want to be sure this will fit. To solve the heat issue I am going to wrap it with a heat blanket or something. Has anybody used a 95 starter on an older model? Will this work? Anything else I need to be aware of?

Not 100% sure about the tooth count on a '95, but the mini-starter on a '93 5.0 can be retrofitted on any T-5 or AOD all the way back to at least '83. I'm running a starter off a '90 Crown Victoria on my '84 AOD 5.0 hatch.

The wiring is about as easy as it gets. Move the fat cable off the switchable side of your fender solenoid to the battery side, then run a wire from the switchable side (where the fat cable once was connected) down to the small post on the mini-starter with a ring connector on each end of the wire. Done.

I think the Mini Starters were the same from 92 through 95.

I just picked up 12 gauge wire just like the diagram shows. Going to put it all together this weekend. I actually traded a lifetime warrenty 88 starter for the high torque at the auto parts store, a $50 difference. So my conversion is going to cost $8, the cost of the wire
