Is it work switching to a different gear like a 3.55 or 3.27 rather then the 3.73s that I have in now? I am looking for some more control off the line. Even with the drag radials Im slippin a bit. The 3.73s are great but did I choose the wrong gear?
I figured the more would be better spent in rear suspension hardwear but am not quite sure what will be best.
My car is less of a drag car and more of a streetable, agile car. (quick in the corners and a strait line) That is the problem all I can find is drag stuff, am I just searching wrong or are there type specific parts for the role of the car?
My Fox is my drag car and I found it pretty easy to get grip even with 4.10s but it is more of a chore with the sn95.
I know I want a limited slip but can not find reviews of opinions on brands.
Also I want to stiffen up the chassis a bit but not as rigid to the point of a drag car.
The car will be getting a new 347 this summer and I want to get the traction issue down before winter is over. That way I can just drop the new engine in and not worry about spinning tires.
thanks

My first mustang was an 89 LX 5.0. I installed 3.55s and hated them. I couldn't get any traction with them. BTW, this was back in the pre-Internet days so I REALLY didn't know anything!!! In my 94, I went 3.27s. It's a good gear but I NOW know with all the suspension mods being done and in the works, 3.55s would be killer.

A lot of guys run 3.73s and 4.10s which I don't know how they're getting traction with the horsepower they have (Good drivers!!!). It seems to me that if you're burning rubber, you're losing. I don't really care that it hooks up well in third after spinning through first and second.

In the end…what it comes down to is having the proper tire/suspension for your setup. Switching to a different gear because of traction issues is not what you should be doing…but rather choose the gear for your intended application/combo.

Also…keep in mind you already have a traction lock setup out back. If you are doing a one wheel peel, look into getting a rebuild kit for it or throw an extra friction disc in it to tighten it up a bit.

I see you have been thinking about this a good bit

IMHO ... There is a flaw in some of the things I saw above

The word that caught my focus was ... CONTROL

In the sixty foot ...........

You'll be more able to control steeper gears like 373's
as opposed to
A less steep ratio like 327's

Have you ever spun in the rain in second gear?

If so ... have you ever noticed ... you gotta back off the pedal a good bit
or even all the way to gain control

You do the same kinda thing in first gear

You'll notice you can regain control with less pedal movement :Word:

I mean come on ......
Any modded 5.0 with a good bit of power is gonna spin em in first gear

With that 347 ... all the more so ...
You just gotta expect a certain amount of it is gonna happen

You'll just have to find the compromise between street & drag that you
feel is right for you.

I'd look to suspension and not moving to a less steep gear ratio

Grady
