Just did the best mod to my car as of yet. Put me in some 4:10 gears and man-o-man I wish I did that a loooong time ago. Its a brand new car. I went from 2:73 to 4:10 and I about shat myself LOL. I was scared it would be too much... but now I want like 5:33s or something .

I have one problem though. While driving over 25 30 mph I hear a noticable whine when I let off the gas. What could this be? When we put in the gear oil we had the car at a pretty good angle, so do you think it might not have gotten full?

Sounds like the backlash on te gears was not set properly.
Who put them in?

Me and 2 friends. But my friend is a good mech. We did have a probelm getting the crush sleve crushed. could thta be a problem? Im pretty sure it was tightend enough. Can I drive the car with the backlash, what will it hurt?

You will destroy your gears in a few days.

If it makes noise on decel, you need to crush the sleeve more. Do a few turns, take it for a drive, do a few more, repeat until it doesnt make a peep.

I did the most unholy sin and reused the existing crush sleeve when I did my 3.73's myself. I just tightened until I felt a slight amount of drag on the pinion and went for a drive. Actually, I didnt tighten enough the first time around and heard that same noise, went down and tightened until I felt a little drag and the noise was gone. 1 1/2 years and 10000 miles later, when I went 4.56 and we took the 3.73's out, they were perfect. Not a scratch or groove on them.

We almost re-used the orginal crush sleeve but luckly a friend of mine had a new one from his 3:73 install. What sucked is we put the impact on it and it didnt want to move. The impact was a cheapie. We couldnt fit a cheater pipe under the car either. The thing got really tight so we assumed it was crushed. I just talked to my friend and we're gonna take it to the shop today and throw it on a left and use a better impact. Also, we'll fill the pumpkin the rest of the way since it will be level.

There is a home way to do it I suppose. It is the reverse of what I did to get it out. Put everything together with the pinion nut off. This uses the axles and gear to hold it in place. Put car on ground and set e brake and put trans in park and chock the wheels. Get a huge 2 foot breaker bar and attach to the pinion nut. Get a scissor jack and put it under the arm of the bar and extend. This will exert the proper amount of force but it is not precise and takes a while.

Yeah, when I did the 3.73's it was like wow, then I did the Paxton and it was like wow oh wow

Did you actually measure backlash before and after, or take a look at the gear mesh pattern?

If you fix it right away without putting too many miles on it you should be O.K.

Mine whine a little on decell, but they were used. Backlash was within spec and everything checked out.
