The hood insulator on my 90 GT is just dingy looking. I took it off and tried to clean it up a bit but it doesn't look that great. I looked at a new one but it is close to $250! I was thinking about just taking it off and paiting the underneath black. Would it totally kill the hood paint from the engine heat if I left this off? I drive the car only a few times a month, so it does not get much wear and tear. Any thoughts on this?

There is no down side to taking the pad off, though it only weighs about three pounds. It is put there for noise reduction, not protection from heat. If you want to keep it and don't want to spend the money for a new one, you can take it off and hit it with some flat black spray paint and it will look much better.

Not sure where you're looking, but hood insulator pads are half that price. Ebay even has a NOS pad listed for $125.

$225, $125...either way it is more than I want to spend on something like that. Thanks for all the help. I think I will just junk it and paint the underside of the hood.

It probably looks "dingy" because its not clear coated like the exterior paint. I got mine from Ford at a decent price. Don't forget the clips that hold it on too. May be able to get them at an auto parts store.
