Hood Repair, Not Mustang...

SoI got a decent 99 Grand Marquis from a co worker for $500 it is a little rough but I am beginning to really dig the car. I just replaced the header panel headlights,corner lights and the grille is still on the way. I think it looks pretty decent but the hood has some damage and I hope to get some ideas/tips on how to make it look better. I am not looking to make it perfect just better.

I know we have some guys versed in bodywork so what do you say?

I have a 1990 Grand Marquis I daily drive and I absolutely love it. So much room, great ride, easy to work on.

There is really no visible damage on the bottom.

go to you tube and watch some of the paintless repairs guys and pay attention to some of the pry bars they use. some of these can be fashioned out of scrap metal, small pipe or even rebar. It's not as hard as it looks, push the bents out as best you can and then fill it with bondo.

That's good actually. Do you have access to a nail gun?

If not, some of what @Rjaaaaaa says is true. You have a couple access holes underneath that will allow you to push some.

First thing you will want to do is to pull the front end of it straight as you can. Keep checking with the gap to the header panel. You'll want a slide hammer for this maneuver.

Once you have that front line as straight as you can get it, show another picture of how it looks and I'll help some more.

OR, go to a salvage yard and find a straight hood. They should be pretty cheap. The only reason I suggest this is that without the proper tools, this can be a little bit of a pita to fix.

I do agree with the jy hood, they made a bazillion of them and you probably could find a white one.

I know Ford was having a paint adhesion problem with their aluminum hoods for awhile. I can't tell you when they changed back and forth between aluminum and steel. I just know the steel ones weighed a lot more when setting them on stands.

Wasn't it back in the '90s when Ford and/or GM were the subject of news stories concerning paint just completely flaking off cars that were a year or two old?

Yeah, we stripped so many completes and repainted them back then. Warranty work. I made money, but jeez i was tired every day!

Both GM and Ford.

So I have decided to look for a hood but not stress over it. I do need to get the trashed tint off the rear window. So here is a run down
$500 - car purchase
$70 header panel
$30 corner lights
$45 headlights
$30 grille ( still enroute )
$135 passenger cat

So I am about $850 in the car, now do I keep it or try to flip it for $1500 ( Without the Cobra Wheels )

I like it, Grover. Why not put the aluminum Marquis wheels on it? I got one of those things as a loaner back in '99 and loved it so much I almost bought one. My friends all thought I was nuts, but man what a great car when it was new. Top notch. If I ever find a really clean one when I have some money in my pocket, it's mine!

Not sure new tires would add enough value to resale to offset the cost. I did find some new Hankooks at walmart for $300 mounted, balanced and installed. That would make the total in the car close to $1200 and I dont have a good feeling of what it would sell for, I feel like it is a $1500 car with the crappy worn out winter tires as it sits now.
