pressure under hood actually forces air OUT of hood scoop
Basically, on our large-grilled cars, you have a HUGE functional scoop right in front of the car . . .
I've seen this discussed a number of other places and usually someone will chime in in and point out that if you look at a car at speed in the rain with a forward-facing hood scoop, you actually end up forcing air OUT of front of the hood scoop. Why? All that pressure built up underneath the hood from air coming in the grille is trying to get out of that hood scoop! (it's possible, though, that a HUGE hood scoop would provide enough volume to push the air back down, but I'm thinking one as big as the grille!)
High pressure air in your intake is a good thing, so there is already a ram-air effect from air coming through the big grille on our cars. Problem is, that air produces a lot of pressure UNDER our cars, increasing lift at speed.
Even better than the high-pressure, hot air under the hood would be high-pressure, cold air. The best place to get that is from right at the high-pressure area right at the base of the windshield, but that would be a pretty ugly hood scoop.
It would seem that the perfect hood would be ugly and would have both cowl induction (maybe even forward-facing and way back) and heat extractors on the side. I've seen a few hoods like this, mainly on trucks . . .
All this being said, yeah, hood scoops look great and complete the musclecar look, but just know why exactly you're installing one . . . I might even go for a '69-70 fiberglass hood with the cougar eliminator style hood. Just for looks of course, and I'm sure it will help cooling in stop and go traffic.
