Hood Scoops

I made my hood scoop gunctional by cutting a hole in thr hood.....and i never had a problem with rain other then the fact that when washing the car or after it rains...your chrome DRFINITLY need some cleaning lol

the scoop works, just as you said, by forcing cooler air into the engine bay or into a sealed air induction system (most efficient).

With the first method, you just need to cut a hole in the hood and make sure that should any water come in it's not getting into the air system (use a filter) and not getting on exposed electrical stuff.

For the second method, you'll want to have a "water trap" before the filter located at a low spot in the track so that water will collect and drain through there and not get into the engine.

Also, as far as scoops go, for it to be efficient the opening should be at least 30square inches.

I have a 66 Shelby hood scoop thats functional (see my garage). Oval K&N filter sticking up into the scoop through the hood. Rubber lip seals hood to filter housing.
Water is ok in the intake air, as long as its controlled. In my scoop is a wad of K&N filter foam to soak up large rain drops. The water is then sucked into the filter & carb evenly.

The function of the scoop is of course to get cooler intake air and if possible have a "ram air" effect at speed.

pressure under hood actually forces air OUT of hood scoop

Basically, on our large-grilled cars, you have a HUGE functional scoop right in front of the car . . .

I've seen this discussed a number of other places and usually someone will chime in in and point out that if you look at a car at speed in the rain with a forward-facing hood scoop, you actually end up forcing air OUT of front of the hood scoop. Why? All that pressure built up underneath the hood from air coming in the grille is trying to get out of that hood scoop! (it's possible, though, that a HUGE hood scoop would provide enough volume to push the air back down, but I'm thinking one as big as the grille!)

High pressure air in your intake is a good thing, so there is already a ram-air effect from air coming through the big grille on our cars. Problem is, that air produces a lot of pressure UNDER our cars, increasing lift at speed.

Even better than the high-pressure, hot air under the hood would be high-pressure, cold air. The best place to get that is from right at the high-pressure area right at the base of the windshield, but that would be a pretty ugly hood scoop.

It would seem that the perfect hood would be ugly and would have both cowl induction (maybe even forward-facing and way back) and heat extractors on the side. I've seen a few hoods like this, mainly on trucks . . .

All this being said, yeah, hood scoops look great and complete the musclecar look, but just know why exactly you're installing one . . . I might even go for a '69-70 fiberglass hood with the cougar eliminator style hood. Just for looks of course, and I'm sure it will help cooling in stop and go traffic.

It's mostly for looks. The most functional feature is as a cold air intake. Looks bad ass though. I am working on a shaker from karkraft and going to fab up a custom base.
