hood shocks instead of prop rod

I was at the races tonight and some guys girlfriend came in the pits with a 87-89 (noticed the steering wheel) white GT real nice and clean looking....He lifted the hood to add 3 LITRES OF OIL cause she said the oil light was on. But the first thing I notices was when he lifted the hood it lifted on it's own and stayed there (actually the first thing I noticed was how hot she was lol)....I went over and looked how it was done and it looked simple to do. have any of you done such an upgrade and is there a kit or do you think he just bolted some on there. I liked how different it was and looked pretty clean without a prop rod

There are kits. They're kinda pricey (somewhere around 75 bucks IIRC). Quite a few of the guys have them. I dont know more because I'm too poor for such items.

my buddy got his for 80 bucks off ebay, once i saw them I ordered them the same night. The measurements are easy to follow and I will never go back to a prop rod. The insurance alone of keeping your hood from getting blown back from wind at a show is worth it, not to mention how easy it is to work on the motor without that prop rod in the way. Even if you have to work on the back of the motor, the struts detach easy and one strut will hold the hood up no problem (fiberglass anyways)

I believe it was sold by redline tuning. They have black for 80ish and stainless for 100ish. worth every penny IMO.

I have them on my car. They are so much nicer than the hood prop. They allow the hood to raise up a few extra inches over the prop making it alot easier to get to the back of the motor from the side. Worth 75 dollars all the way.

I put the stainless kit on the wife's Cobra. Makes working under the hood much easier.

Roland, I ordered mine direct from redlinetuning. I think it was $79 for the black ones with black brackets. All you need is a drill and a regular size rivit gun. Very easy, but you will need someone to help hold the hood up while your working on it. They have directions on their website, very good directions.

You won't regret getting them. Its so nice to just pop the release then watch it raise on up without doing anything else. It does open the hood up a little higher than the prop rod too, just so you know. I think the black brackets were like $15 more, but better than just the zinc plated brackets.

Roland, when you install the shocks to the brackets, take a small screwdriver and just rotate the slip inside the shock a little. It helps it slide right onto the ball bracket. That was the only problem I really had and got it figured out.

Instructions are very very good

Will they work on fiberglass hoods?

Im not sure if my hood has a lip on it like the stock hood does for the top of the strut to mount to.
