The battery hook-up can create a slight additional draw on the system when the car is off. Like you said, that's not too hot. There are about 100 wires under the dash that will work (ignition column/switch wires, a switched accessory in the underdash fusebox, etc). I'd choose something really close to where your tach is mounted because there are so many places to grab power. The ignition wires are of serious gauge and would work well if that's convenient.
