I just put my new 306 together and there is a horrible ticking sound. It did it on the stock motor too. I have stock inj. and rocker arms. I cant figure out what it is. Could it be a cloged up injector? Any other suggestions? Thanks

Is it consistent with the idle speed, speeding up when you rev and slowing down when you let off? Do you have aftermarket headers? Have you checked for an exhaust leak? Mine had a horrible tick like that and it turned out to be an exhaust leak, some new Fel Pro header gaskets and Stage 8 locking header bolts fixed it right up though.

I got a bad run of about 6 lifters in a brand new FRPP replacement set of lifters. Use a stethescope and find out where the noise is.

Can you diagnose a bad lifter by stethescope?

If it's just the lifter, yes, but if there are valve train issues, it's a lot harder.

depends on how loud and how much side play the rockers have. Good rockers don't make much noise when the geometry is right.

I built my 306 its a stock b block 302 bored to a 306 DSS piston, Victor Jr heads, chrome molly puch rods, harlem sharp roller rockers and IT makes a slight KNOCKING noise. BUT it runs AWESOME, to this day i have no idea what it is but she runs great. I replaced the lifters, valve covers for more clearance etc etc etc???

I've seen if you dont have the pushrod correctly in the lifter or rocker pocket that its supposed to sit in and tighten the rocker arm down, it bends the crap outta the pushrod and makes a horrible ticking sound. Good thing I had some extra pushrods lol
