Housing costs in CT are a lot higher than most places... I didn't pay it, but the house was appraised in 2007 for $386,000. 2/3 of an acre in a town that can be looked at as good or bad. Good on the outskirts (where the house is), bad in the downtown areas. The house is anywhere from 2125 SF to 2394 SF on the 1st and 2nd floor (two different assessors came up with two different numbers, NO idea why the large difference), 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath on these floors, and 1 bed, 1 bath in the finished in law apartment downstairs.

I paid $100,000+ more than your girlfriend, but still got it below what it should be worth when the economy comes around.

I did some crown moulding work last night. Decided to do the main floor half bath. Can't hurt to get work done for the Holidays! By the way Justin, this crown I did myself. Knew I still had it in me.

BTW the paint was wet in the photos, and the wall paint, is obviously not finished!

BTW what did you use on the joints in the corners? A wood filler/putty or a type of caulk?

Justin, I used caulk in the corners, putty on the staple holes. THe caulk I smoothed by hand, the putty with some sand paper.

The deck is going to be a great place for partys. Already had a couple of BBQs even with the cool weather!

Anyone who is jealous and doesn't own a house, no need to be. It's a LOT of work. Every night / weekend I pretty much spend working on it. I enjoy the work, so for me its fine, but if your not into keeping up with a house and would rather go out and spend your money and time on booze and hookers... well, you get the idea.

we rent a house here, and the woman is always hot on my ass to do something productive. lease is up in 6 months probably going to stay in it but you never know. i enjoy working on it, just dont see the reasoning behind putting a bunch of money into a rental that is one of the nicer houses on the block. /shrug... women.

F that, if you dont have a motgage on it dont put a dollar into the house that you cant take with you. Of course she wants you to work on it, cause its freee if you do it.

Putting time and money into a rental is why we stopped renting. No gains in the end. The house is only going to benefit from paint, trim and updating.

Sure post pictures, I love seeing house stuff (did go to school for Architecture).

Every state has its expensive and inexpensive areas. My house in Greenwich, would be $600-700K most likely. Even this house in the outlying towns of New Haven would be in the $450-500K range (trust me, I tried to buy there, lol). The economy is helping those of us looking to get into the market...

Center of the state, almost dead center.

If you like the New England feel it's nice out this way.

Finished the bathroom last night. Just in time for Thanksgiving tomorrow! Let me know what you think. I suck and didn't get a single before photo on ANY of the rooms. Not sure why, as I always do, but oh well.

Also what is your opinion? Should I leave the soffit alone, or remove the popcorn, and paint the vertical surfaces brown, then wrap in crown moulding?

I will in due time, but for now this is going to be the best money I spend. With the economy as it is, I'm sure buyng low and updating will only help me out in the end!

See I went to school for architecture... so for me, it's a toss up. I have my fun with the car and the house, for different reasons. I rented for some time and it sucked. I looked at some small cheap houses, and they sucked. I decided I wanted something nice, clean and hopefully get my money back in the end.

Different strokes for different folks

yep, im in the process of renting-to-buy a shop space to live in, the owner is cool and doesnt care, so im converting the office space to the living area and adding some lifts and such to the shop space, along with my tools, to me that a dream home, spending the night under the same roof as my car is awesome to me, but im a weirdo, but nice house dude
