When going into a parking lot or stopping ... sometimes I downshift to 1st (I like the sound and feel)
I never go above 3500rpm

And this....
When stopped, I like to hold 1st ... not WOT, just give it some gas to about 3500rpms

How bad is this for a tranny?? I know manually shifting when racing is bad.

Btw, I have a aftermarket cooler, no kit.

I'm assuming you have an automatic? I think the only thing you're hurting is the motor. I like to hear mine too, but you have to think about keeping the RPM's low, since its only putting more turns on the motor.

I don't know if it is bad or not but when I had my stocker I would downshift from 3rd to 2nd cause I'm an idiot. After about 3 weeks of that the tranny fluid was burnt, heat is the worst thing for a transmission. Check your fluid and see if it is still a nice cherry red or getting dark. Even though you have a aftermarket tranny cooler I still would be on the safe side and not do it.

So downshifting an auto tranny will hurt it, if it gets too hot?

I was always told that downshifting a auto is bad news.If you upshift it is not that bad cause the trany shifts firmer and does not have that slip for comfort sake that the factory calibrates them for.All aod and aode tranys need a trango shift improver kit.It corrects alot of problems with the sloppy shift and rough bumps these tranys have. The transgo hp shift kit is a all out wicked shift kit. When I shift my car from 1st to second I have to make sure the car is straight cause I get the chirp between shifts. It resets the govner so it shifts at a higher rpm too.The shift improver runs under 30 and the hp runs from 100-150.
