How BAD is this?

Well I was getting ready to install my heads today & while cleaning off the block I decided to remove the carbon off the pistons too.

This is my first time changing out heads so this may be normal but I instinctively put on the brakes after discovering what looks like little cracks in the tops of some of the pistons.

My question is exactly that - Is this indeed normal wear & tear or instead am I in need of a rebuild.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

to me, they dont look cracked, but the block looks like it can use a good coolant flush.

Looks like just part of the casting, I wouldn't be too worried about it.

I noticed it needed a coolant flush too. Other than that it doesn't look like a crack at all; use 'em!

I agree, They do look like some type of casting lines. If your really worried send the pics to Manley's tech line. Do you have a picture of your car? If so I'd like to see it. I wish I know how to attach BIG picture files like that....

What a relief. I haven't even driven the car yet ( other than around the block at delivery ) & having the motor rebuilt would just delay the process even longer.

LOL! Yes, It definitely NEEDS a coolant flush. I'm kinda bummed out about installing my nice & clean re- built heads with all that gack through-out the motor, water pump, hoses & whatever else it may have attatched itself to.

When I first got the car it had been sitting for almost five years so I figure thats where alot of the corosion has come from?

I dont really have any good pics of the car right now because as soon as I got it I parked it in the car port, set it up on stands, & went to work. Its been this way since September.

Basically I just had to raise the vehicle & then by unbolting the motor-mounts I was able to lower the engine just enough to get the heads off.

The motor-mounts are actually bolted through the inner fenders which make detaching from the car anyway, a pretty easy task.

As for everything else that I have encountered - your absoulutely correct in having to be flexible. ( both mentally & physically )

Nice car! Are you sure its the trim and not the door? At a glance, it looks like the front door gap is wider at the top than the bottom.

i've always wanted a Tiger, i think of them as a poor man's Shelby, but when you are talking about a Tiger "poor" is kind of a relative term. i used to watch Get Smart on tv after school just to see the Tiger. i like those mesh style wheels on it too but i'm kind partial to that style of wheel.

ps, ditch the chrome stat housing as they always warp really bad, it looks your's is already well on it's way to warpville.

Do those lines in any way match the quench area of the heads?

I hate to sound ignorant - but what is the quench area?

Don't worry about those casting flaws. I've got a brand new set of Manley pistons in the box still and they have casting lines on them as well. As long as there aren't any dents from valves smacking them, you're good!!!

Those look like forged pistons and the flaws are porosity in the aluminum. It should not hurt anything other than create little "hot spots" once in a while when/if you run the A/F lean.
