after 217,000 miles i'm going to be changing the rear gears and adding 31 spline axles to my 88 gt. i plain on putting in 3.73's but i would like to know what is in there now. the car is almost all stock (short throw shifter, cold air and alum. drive shaft.) so i know the rear gears are the one's that ford put in.

does anybody have a Vin decoder or know where i can find out what gears i have
thanks

You can either pull the numbers off the tag that's on your pumpkin....or you can measure how many times the driveshaft spins when you turn your wheels

Look at the tag on your door. It should look something like this:

Note in the lower right corner is a box marked AX for axle. Let me know what the axle code is and I can tell you what ratio your car left the factory with.

only problem with door tags is that possibly the gears were changed at some point...but generally that's not the case

+1 or the door was changed. The best way to tell is jack the rear up and count the number of times the driveshaft turns compared to the tire.

+ 2. You can never assume anything about what gear ratio you have.
