i see your point. even tho the 5.4 in that era wasn't designed for the mustang, its still a weak comparison. to me, its still somewhat comparing apples to oranges. i have actually owned two camaros, one being a LT1. i'm pretty much a die hard mustang guy but i did enjoy the camaro when i owned it. will i ever buy another one? probably not. but they are fast cars.

i think the 281 just doesnt get enough credit sometimes. being such a small engine, i think it does pretty well.

The little 281 isn't that impressive though. It's got a great reputation for reliability but that's about it. Keep the following in mind:

2005 Aston Martin 4.3L V-8 = 380 hp
2008 Aston Martin 4.7L V-8 = 420 hp
1999 Audi 4.2L V-8 = 355hp

Hell, even Hyundai sells a 4.6 V-8 that makes 375 HP.

The fact of the matter is the 4.6 modular wasn't built to be a performance engine and it wasn't a very good truck engine either. It was designed to work in a variety of Ford models and because of this it isn't particularly good at any one thing aside from reliability.

With the assistance of after market parts, specifically FI, the 4.6 can be a very potent little engine. I think the fact that the aftermarket responded and developed products to maximize the performance on the chitty 4.6 is a testament to the popularity of the Mustang and the dedication of Mustang owners to mod their cars. The 4.6 doesn't deserve much credit, however the aftermarket and we enthusiasts that support it do deserve credit for taking this sub-par engine and making it work.

Sorry fiveoho, I don't mean to be negative and I'm certainly not trying to be an ass. I love my car and I think its great that you love yours. Honestly there's nothing better to me than cruising around in my slow ass NPI. I love the sound of the my modular V-8, and despite the fact that many minivans can give my car a run for its money I still enjoy it.

I just think its difficult to give the mod motor much credit, other than the fact that Ford was the first of the big three to mass produce an OHC engine and use it in a variety of applications (trucks, sedans, pony cars, boats - like bill's lincoln) AND the fact that the mod motor has proven to be one of the more reliable engines of our time.

Which would you rather have, a stout, very dependable motor or a high horsepower motor that will give you many problems? I'm not being sarcastic. Sometimes people have to choose one or the other.
You should, troll around the Camaro websites to see what kind of engine problems they are consistantly having.
How many home mechanics know how work on an Ashton Martin, Audi, or Hyundai. The thing about the Mod engine is its simplicity, which definantly adds to its durability.
I am challenging you to compare a Head change to the Ashton Martin or Audi to the Mod engine.
Heck, I am not even trying to think about how many sensors those engines have.

And in response to rusty trombone, I already praised the mod motor for its reliability. However, compared to most modern performance engines the modular's output/cubic inch is not all that great.

Had the 96-98 cars come with the PI heads from the factory, 99-04 cars the 3V, and the 05+ the coyote, this would be a difficult statement for me to make..

I'm sorry but this is completely asinine, and completely unfounded.

I'm guessing that you don't realize that stock thirdgen F-bodies pulled around .92g on the skidpad in bone stock form, with the Gatorback tires of the day and 16" rims. Fourth gens aren't far from that. A few suspension upgrades and sticky tires and you get into the 1.06-1.07 range on a thirdgen, which is what a ZR-1 Vette pulls--the new one, not the early '90s one.

Do you know anything about the suspension design of F-bodies? So many people take a crap all over the cars, while knowing next to nothing about them.
