How dangerous to run drag radials on stock 28 spline axles?

I wanna mount some Nitto 555r drag radials on my old 16x7.5 pony rims. But I figured I would need to replace the axles and differential with some 31 splines. If I didn't, and ran the drag radials on the stock 28 spline axles, how long before they snap? Is this a completely dumb thing to do? I have no problem upgrading to 31 splines, but it will just take longer due to lack of money. :notnice: lol

125+ plus 1/4 passes on 315 Nitto's and 35 passes on BFG, and no problems for me. Its more a function of how much power you make and how well it hooks up. Mine still spins if I try to launch above 4k, and I only pull 1.9 60's. Stock axles are safe with drag radials, slicks are another story.

So tell me about the slicks, cus these aren't gonna be daily driven. I'm gonna be mounting them on an extra set of wheels I have, and use them only once a month. So I was debating on drag radials or slicks.

Slicls basically get rid of worrying about traction, for people under 400hp anyways. They are about the same money, but it is not usually suggested to try any crazy 5k+ rpm clutch dumps on stock axles & tranny. People have done it without breaking, but who knows for how long. I plan on running Mickey Thompson ET Streets next year, 26x10.5x16 on the stock 16's. I am rebulding my trac-loc this winter and upgrading to 31 spline axles. It should be good for 1.7 60's and 2-3 tenths off my time, even more when I put on the intake & headers I have in the garage.

I had no problems with 315 Nitto DR's. My t-5 broke before the rear. I'm now trying to do stock axles with slicks this weekend.

Good question to the poster. I was wondering the same thing about the axles.

94SC50, keep us posted about your run with the slicks on the stock axles. I'm looking to get an s-trim also. Who did your install?

Lemme know how it goes. I was hoping to get some drag radials before mid-november when I head out to the track again. But if I had to beef up the rear I wouldn't be able to. Not enough money. :(

I ran nitto 245-50-16 drag radials for 4yrs on the stock axles and pulled mis to low 1.7 60's. I did not dump the clutch though, i slipped it pretty good and in doing so I didn't "shock" the driveline parts. It played hell on clutches 9I'm on my 4th) but I didn't break anything. If you dump the clutch... you may not be so lucky. I would run ET streets if the wheels are strickly for the track and just not kill it on the launch. I did this a few times before I upgraded to 31 spline axles. i suggest superior axles. My dad, my buddy Mike, and I all BENT strange 31 spline SS axles... I would NEVER run them again, we all run superiors now and don't have any issues.
