how did i mess up this install

i put a tailshaft seal im my 5.0l 5spd because it was leaking its still leaking theres no play in the output shaft.but im leaking still i did all my reasearch i pryed the old seal out and used a big socket to reinstall the seal.reinstalled the driveshaft and drove it home it smoked off the exhaust but i thought it was just the greasy hand prints from the job on the exhaust. but it still smokes off the exhaust not nearly as bad its like 1/4 of the first day.im going to check the fluid level today i dont think its overfilled because very little came out of the tailshaft when i pulled the seal. any suggestions?

Examine the yolk where the seal rides. Often the wear can be felt by dragging your fingernail over it and feeling the wear and ridges. That means it is time to replace the yolk ($45-$85) or spring for a shiny new aluminum driveshaft.
