How do I take out old Ignition Cylinder?

I have a 1965 convertible with a problem.. my only key broke off into the ignition. I already have a new ignition cylinder but i have tried drilling out the old one with no success.. The old cylinder is still in with a drill hole about a cenimeter diameter and an inch deep through were the keys used to go..I got to the point where the whole cylinder and the outer ring just rotates but doesnt come out... I'd appreciate anyone with any helpful tips...thank you!

I don't actually remember other than I did get it out of mine without too much headache. I tore everything out of the dash though since I'm restoring so that probably made it a lot easier not having the gauge bezel in the way. Turn your ass upside down and look up under there with a flashlight, must be some kind of retainer behind it that just threads on it perhaps.

Their is (or in your case) was a small hole on the front of the ingnition cylinder itself you are suppost to insert a small wire (paperclip) into and then turn it to the ACC position and pull it out. I keep a bucket of keys from past cars as there were only a few iginition keys back in the 60's. Now that you have drilled it out you may have locked the little locking pen in place so I don't know what else to tell you.

Yeah, that pinhole on the cylinder front is so you can remove the cylinder. If you damaged it enough to lock it up, about your only hope now is to get the bezel ring off and pull the whole switch out.

I now relize what i did... I did infact lock it up. How do i go about fixing that? (trying to avoid buying a whole new ignition assembly)...

I also had to drill out the ignition switch cylinder on the 66. drill slow and drill the ears on the end of the cylinder

I had to replace the ignition switch assembly, but it was 14 dollars

Make sure you unscrew the wiring assembly from the back of the switch assembly so it does not get damaged. I used a fairly large bit going slow and it ate the soft pot metal pretty fast until it could be turned and taken out of the bezel.
