How do I take out this interior trim piece?

The plastic trim piece that sits right below my rear window is badly faded and I was going to see if I could take it out and repaint it. Hopefully this can be done somewhat easily. Here is the piece I am talking about:

I have the same problem with my car. That piece I believe is part of the entire package tray. I haven't tackled the project yet but I might this weekend if I have time. Ill let you know if I do and ill try to take pics for u as well.

Fold rear seat backs down.
Remove 3 (I believe ) 10mm bolts ,pull rear headrest away.
The rear deck cover should just slide right out.

If not,you may need to remove the rear 1/4 window interior trim.
Remove the coat hanger with a Philips screwdriver.
Flip seat belt cover up,remove belt with a t-45 bit iirc.
Grab trim at edges,pull straight out to release a series of clips.
Careful not to break the rear defrost connector.

The rear deck cover has never slid out easily in my experience without removing all of the rear interior. The corners of the rear deck cover are underneath the large side panels; while you can pry them out, you're likely to damage the thin particleboard that the deck cover is made of. Also be aware that there is a metal clip in the middle of the deck cover, so you can't just lift the cover straight out; it must be slid back into place.

I always found removing the rear deck cover to be a PITA, especially since to remove the side panels you must remove the rear seat. But I've removed the interior so many times now the process is completely memorized.

Hmmm,mine slides out quite easily.
also no metal clip on the rear deck trim for me.
It also appears that the ENTIRE rear interior doesn't need to be removed,just the 1/4 window trim.
But,I'm not positive,as I have all my rear interior out of the car at the moment.

So I guess the only other advice I have for the OP is to be careful while you're removing things.

Now if you do need to remove the rear armrest panels,you should only need a trim removal tool.

Pull up on door sill plates to release clips.

On front edge of rear seat bottom,find the 2 white plastic tabs.
push in on tabs with tool to release seat,pull seat up and out of car.

With tool,remove various plastic push pins attaching armrest trim to rear seat back frame,and 1 at the top behind the 1/4 window trim.
Dont forget the 2 small plastic push pins attaching the weather striping to the plastic trim.
at edge of the armrest trim,near the door latch,pull trim straight out to release clip.
Carefully guide plastic trim out of car.

If I forgot something, someone please chime in.

Oh,and to completely remove the 1/4 window trim from the car,you'll need to detach the seat belt from the body.
At the rear floor board,slid plastic cover up the belt,with the t-45 (I think) bit, detach belt from body.

Now worries. That was actually going to be my next question.

Thanks for all the answers everyone. I think I might give this a shot this weekend but I'm a little nervous about removing the side trim. I'd hate to break something.

SEM Landau Black is a perfect match for the 94-98 black.
I use it on the dash board and other trim pieces.
I don't know if it'll work on that particle board rear deck cover though.

No,like Chythar pointed out,its just a particle board with some sort of fabric on it.

Yours could be different(but I doubt it), as mine doesn't have those speaker covers,just the particle board over my Mach 460 rear speakers.

As I understand it, factory Mach 460 systems had the metal grille covers over the speakers. Non-Mach 460 just had a flat carpeted board with holes in the board.

I've seen plenty of Mach 460 equipped Mustangs both with and without those metal covers.

I was just going to say- I have Mach 460 without the metal grills.

I wonder what the story is behind that. Good to know though; I bought the car used in 1996 and was suspicious of it not having the grills back there.

Were you able to get your piece out and painted over the weekend?

I only managed getting the headrest out of mine... I always weary about taking trim off because I think I am going to break it. Should I pick up a set of removal tools?

A close up on how badly faded this is:

Now I just need to find the right paint... does this require a clear coat? And what kind of prep do I need to do? The piece seems pretty fragile so I do not know what it can handle as far as cleaning/prep goes.

No clear coat needed,though I would suggest an adhesion promoter before paint (though I didn't use any and my dash still looks great.)
