I was wondering if, from wut you can see, these vifters look ok. I think thats the circled ones seem like they are compressed more and well I dont know...
It's compressed because it's a hydrolic (sp) lifter. They are spring loaded, and will collapse when no oil is being pumped into them. They are compressed because you have that lifter/pushrod/valve open, or coming open/closed. There is pressure on it from the valve spring. No problems I can see. Were they ticking at all?
Yea there was ticking, loud and it was comming from DS . I thought it was because I used those lifters on my other cam then installed them on a new cam and the just needed tochatter a bit before they broke in. Also, im not sure that I didnt take the rockers off before I shot that pic.
Had same problem in my 5.0, it was #1 exhaust lifter that collapsed on me and massively ticked, i scrapped the 5.0 because i was too pissed, i too re-used the lifters when changinf the cam, i will never do that again on a roller cam.
You check for collapsed lifters by wigling the suspected rocker with the nut tightened all the way down, if the rocker is kind of loose (enough to move side to side a little and a good amount of play up and down) then it is a collapsed lifter.
OK the motor is out of tha car now. I have had to bolt and unbolt the lower intake so many ****ing times now I dont wanna do it again. How do I check if they are ok from outside?put the rockers on and tighten the rocker stud bolt all the way down, not like untill there is 0 lash then the 3/4 turn? not like adjusting them just bolt the thing down with the rocker arm and then try and wriggle it up and down side to side? If i can tell and I have to take the stupid near stripped thing off how can i tell my looking at them?
o i see they are roller rockers, then that method above won't work for you, lemme think here.
For future referance, always use new lifters with a new cam, its just good insurance that you won't run into these problems a few months after the install.
Edit: What i'd do, just to be safe, is to order a new set of roller lifters for your motor, they're not that expensive and good peace of mind to know you have brand new lifters under there. This will most definitely get rid of you ticking problem. I was just too lazy to do this and had a brand new 466 sitting on the stand waiting to go in.
Would the only sound a collapsed lifter make is that slight tick? Or would it cause anything else to make a sound as well, like the valves or something
yes, before you buy new lifters, if you feel like putting it all back together and maybe taking it apart again, go to the auto store and buy some liquid that frees stuck lifters, i think the stuff in the yellow bottle is the good stuff, it sounds like water inside when shacken its not the thick crap, it will unstick the problem lifter if thats the problem, if it doesn't work, you will have to buy new lifters. You did make sure your rockers are tightened correctly, 0 lash then 1/2 tp 3/4 turn more? if so, its a lifter problem.
